Question about alarm system - 2015 LE

I just bought a new 2015 Sienna LE. I would like to have a car alarm. I am not interested in a remote start.

The dealers I went to were all confused about the alarm options from Toyota. I see on Toyota's website, there is a VIP security system that has a MSRP of $359. Most of the dealers told me that they didn't offer that. The one that did said they also said they would charge me not only the price of the security system, but also the price to install it, and they quoted me 2 hours of labor for the installation.

I bought the Sienna without it, and was thinking that I would get an aftermarket security system. But I really don't want to carry around 2 remotes, and with the cost of programming it so that an aftermarket system can open the sliding doors, the price would be nearly the same as what the dealer quoted me for the factory alarm with installation.

I have been surfing around and I have seen people writing that for older models Siennas, the RS3200 alarm system is actually already installed, but just not turned on. Is this the case in the 2015 Sienna as well? Can I just have the dealer turn it on? I have seen on older threads that they will likely charge me 1 hour labor for that, even though it only takes 5 minutes. Will the dealer I just bought it from do this, or since they said I have to buy the alarm and 2 hours installation, should I try to go to a different dealer and see if they can just turn it on? I don't think I need the GBS.

I was also looking at buying the Toyota security system, but it looks like the only part included is the GBS, which also seems to indicate that the RS3200 is already installed and present. Do only dealers have the computer equipment to turn on the RS3200? Or would an independent alarm installer possibly have one as well?

Thanks for the help.

I've heard of this on other cars before. However, I believe that even though the unit is there, there is still one attachment item they need to install to make the alarm work. Not 100% sure about the Sienna though. It was how my Mazda6 was.

I've been watching the same videos on turning on the alarm system. I bought the cable and loaded the software. I connected to my 2014 Sienna and followed the instructions. I went to options an enabled the alarm, then went to the security area and turned on the alarm. Nothing. I repeated this several times hoping that I missed something, Nope. No Go. It does seem to be there, but won't turn on like the older Siennas. Let me know if you find something different.

Just to play devil's advocate a bit... are car alarms even worth it anymore? I think their usage has trailed off a bit in recent years, but not long ago it was so common to hear car alarms going off for one reason or another that most people wouldn't even turn their heads. So sure, it would make a lot of noise if someone tried to break in, but with the total apathy of most passers-by, I doubt it would even scare off most criminals. About the only time I would see one being useful would be if the car is parked in your driveway while you're in the house such that you could hear the alarm yourself. Otherwise, I think most people think more about how to get the noise to stop than whether or not the car making the noise is being stolen.

I hear ya. If a thief really wants your car, they'll find a way to take it. But a car alarm is added peace of mind. Totally worth it especially when you figure out how to get it for way way cheaper than the dealer suggests. I spent $20 on the techstream cable and software and $50 on the hood latch. So $70 for the basic factory car alarm isn't bad at all IMO.

You were exactly right mutantlobster! Confirmed that 2015 SE has the factory alarm, it just needed to be activated thru techstream and install the bypass on the hood latch. Fortunately I had the bypass as I bought the GBS ( which i hadnt installed yet). Initially I thought It didnt have it when i turned it on the techstream. Nothing happened but then I noticed the hood open warning just like mutantlobster mentioned. Installed the bypass and voila!!!! Alarm worked! Thanks for all the info

Installed OEM latch from an XLE/Limited on my SE. Simple three screw install. Activated the alarm in “Other Options” on Techstream.

Latches are exactly same except for the microswitch and harness. If they sold the switch/harness then it would bolt onto OEM latch.

Got around to installing mine as well. Had to take the grill off to make the bolts on the latch more accessible. FYI you may need to use a small flathead to pry off the cover of the bolt on the bottom:

Here’s a side-by-side comparisonof both latches - microswitch is circled in red:

Enabling the alarm in Techstream was easy enough.

Has anyone been able to get clarification on whether or not the Glass Breakage Senor can be installed on a ‘15-‘17? I get conflicting info about part #08190-0C820 - some sites say it’s compatible, others don’t.

2017 Toyota Sienna Gbs ecu. Security system. Unit, preplacement, interior, control - 081900C820 | San Francisco Toyota, San Francisco CA says yes

08190-0C820 - Toyota Parts Deal says no

the main Toyota parts site says yes though 2017 Toyota Sienna Gbs ecu. Security system. Unit, preplacement, interior, control - 081900C820 - Genuine Toyota Accessory

Anyone have the Toyota Glass Breakage Sensor? wasn’t conclusive

I bought terminal taps at autozone near my home (color is red one). I connected with a cable (about 3" should ok). Then I plug it on that connector; it is bypassed and worked for 2 weeks w/o problem at all.

  1. I just saw the connector on the hood latch. It is a male one. If its a female, its much easier by using paper clip trick ( i saw it on utube on different car) to by pass it. For the people who bypass it, what do you use? Thanks in advance🙏
