Oil Viscosity for 2015 Sienna

My new 2015 Sienna Owners Manual says the engine should use 0W-20 motor oil. It goes on to say I can use 5W-20 weight oil if 0W-20 weight is not available but I should go back to the lighter weight oil at the next oil change.

I live in Phoenix, Arizona where the temperature never falls below 28F on the coldest winter night and the temperature can be over 118F during the day during the summer.
The average temperature during the year is 46F-68F.

I realize the light (thin) 0W-20 oil helps engine starting when it is cold and it helps boost the MPG but limiting myself to it greatly decreases the choices in Brands that are available.

Given the high ambient temperatures here in Phoenix does anyone see anything wrong with me using the 5W-20 oil all of the time in my new van?

0W-20 (Pennzoil/Mobil) is readily available in all auto stores including Walmart. If you choose to use 5W-20 then the Toyota recommended oil change interval is 5K instead of 10K with 0W-20

0W20 is synthetic. 5W20 is available as conventional or synthetic. Either way, I'd use synthetic. It's more stable at high temperatures.

Re: Oil Viscosity for 2015 Sienna

I had 7 qts of 5W20 Royal Purple synthetic oil left over from my RAV-4 after I sold it, I put it in the Sienna last oil change about 3K miles ago and haven't had any noticeable effects in Southern California weather, which is likely cooler than Arizona anyway. I'm going to run it to 10K, synth 5W20 is practically the same thing as 0W20.

10,000 mile interval(with synthetic) is just fine in all driving styles and conditions, just check the dipstick on a regular basis.

If this (or any other forum) contained only facts, it would have about 5% of the posts it has.
Dry reading at best. Don't know where you got that idea.

I'll be right back, have to pop some more corn and get a beverage...

You make some pretty wild assumptions for a guy who only wants to deal in facts.

I live just down the road from you and agree w/extremely high temps in the summer...Am a firm believer what the owners manual says and concerning oil/change miles, 10,000 is what is recommended..As stated by many the 0-20W, full synthetic is the way to go..Walmart is probably the cheapest for DIY people and you can buy filters on Ebay (Toyota brand) real cheap...Others have posted some real good answers here too...
