Humming Noise From Underneath When Parked

I noticed last night that my 2011 Sienna XLE was generating a slight but very noticeable humming noise from underneath. It went away after I had started and turned off the engine. I thought I would post here and see if there's anyone else that experienced the same condition before I take it into the dealership. Thanks!

Re: Humming Noise From Underneath When Parked

We need more details.

Is it only when the van is running? Do you hear it from insite or only outside? Does it happen only initially upon start up?

My first guess would be fuel pump but who knows.

cheers.

Is it a buzzing under the steering wheel? Interior?

This noise is normal. I remember reading somewhere in the manual that after 5 hours (I believe) after your shutdown the engine it always happens. I'll try to find the exact page.

Yes, it's more like a buzzing sound. Only happens a few hours after the car is parked w/ engine turned off. The sound seems to be more noticeable from outside the car. Seems to be coming from the bottom side of the car.. Thank you all by the way!

I'm curious to know what this is even though I have an older model.
Please post here whenever you find out. Thanks in advance.

I noticed the same thing tonight on my '11, parked in the garage. It had been about 5 hrs or so since it had last been out today as well. I'd be interested in what it is. Sounded like the fuel pump when I was peeking under there.

Does your van have a smart key?

See page 24 of your manual. Perfectly normal.

And kudos to Toyota for putting "noise under car" in the manual index!!

Re: Humming Noise From Underneath When Parked

Just heard the noise on my '11 XLE AWD in the garage. Pg 24 in the manual indicates after the vehicle is parked for 5 hours a Fuel Evaporation Leakage Check is performed. The test lasts several minutes and is perfectly normal.

Nice feature to deter thieves too. Now only if it flashed "Alerting police via satellite" somewhere on the van.

Re: Humming Noise From Underneath When Parked

I noticed this hum as well last night as I was reassembling my Ski-Doo in the garage. Freaked me out. Glad it's allegedly "normal". It did seem to last longer than a few minutes, though. I went upstairs grabbed the (boring regular metal) key, put it in the ignition, turned it and the noise stopped. Removed key and it stayed silent until I finished for the night (another 30-60 minutes).
