SD Card Playback

I just purchased a 2017 Sienna and was really excited to try out putting a bunch of movies on an SD card for my kids. Is there really no way for me/my wife to select the movie that they are watching from the front console? It appears that you can only play/pause and that's it. I thought that it would at least give us a listing of the files on the disk.

Re: SD Card Playback

There have been past threads about this which seemed to verify what you found. It looks like the last Sienna that allowed full control from the head unit was the 2014 but it didn't have an SD card slot and was regular DVD instead of Blu-ray.

Re: SD Card Playback

I just bought a 2017 Sienna and am having troubles getting the SD card to play any movies. It gives me an error message on the front console that no music files are detected. I believe that I have everything formatted correctly. Can you give me any tips on how to get this functionality to work?
Thank you!

Re: SD Card Playback

I've been looking for a solution to replace the player. I thought about loading up an old phone with movies and using the HDMI port. But the HDMI connector only worked intermittently.

The main problem is not being able to see the screen in front means you can't just use a regular media player (like an Amazon Fire or Roku) instead, you would have to sit in back and navigate to the movies every time. And the format support is very hit and miss. Sometimes a file will work, but another file with the same container won't. I suspect it is codec support.

So I am still looking for an SD or USB media player that will (a) auto-play and (b) include next/previous track buttons on the front.

Re: SD Card Playback

I have a 2015 and I believe it mainly support mp4 video. The only problem I have is when choosing the movies I want I have to use the next track button on the remote and go through each file. It would be nice if they have a menu to choose folder/file I want on an icon like the computer.

Re: SD Card Playback

Plan to plug an external USB HD and plug it into the HDMI. Fortunately, my kids are old enough to navigate with the remote.

@sienna_doc Did you end up using the device you mentioned? I was just looking at it on Amazon for our 2017 Sienna we bought last week. Does it work well?
