2017 Sienna | Gas Tank Question

Past weekend I was driving back home from a 950+ miles road trip. At 32 miles on the Range to empty, I got the symbol for fuel tank. Around 27 miles on range, i decided to fuel up. Only pumped 15.688 gallons, I thought the fuel tank was 20 gallon. If wrong somebody correct me on this; 15.6 gallons I was on full. Curiosity question, i had 4 gallon left basically like 50+ some miles left for travel. What the reserve for 2017 Sienna?

Re: 2017 Sienna | Gas Tank Question

Based on your experience (US Gallons?), I would say reserve light goes on with about 4 gallons remaining.
My experience with most vehicles is similar. 20% left in tank, reserve light goes on.
Personally, I'd rather mfr.'s err that way than the other.
Running out of fuel is not fun, and can earn you a ticket if you are on an interstate. Ticket is for "failing to keep vehicle under control". If you run out of fuel, you are not in control, just like in an airplane, I guess.

Re: 2017 Sienna | Gas Tank Question

Typical Toyota cars/Trucks/SUV have about 3gals left when the gasoline light comes up. Your tank is 20.9gal. I have had my gas tank replaced before as I found out the floater within the tank is bent so it prematurely thinks the tank is full when it is not. Does our gasoline gauge display full with the 15.688 gal filled ? It also depends on day and time and weather. If it is a warm day during day time, your tank can still have trapped air inside creating a false volume too.

15.688 was full tank of gas.. Range was into 425+ miles after the fill up. Trapped air inside? is that bad? This was a brand new vehicle, bought around 8 miles on it about 2 months ago.

Re: 2017 Sienna | Gas Tank Question

It's worse than just the inconvenience of running out of gas.... In the final throws of 'running out', your fuel system will be running overly lean and misfires will occur. A single "running out of gas" incident can cost you your catalytic converters as they will quickly overheat and melt down internally. Yes, running out of gas can cost you about $3k in repairs!

For that reason, manufacturers have gone almost universally to gauges and lights that will prompt you to refuel with 3-4 gallons remaining. Maybe even more...

Current: '15 Sienna Limited Premium (FWD), '14 Subaru Outback, '13 Honda CRV AWD.

Past: '08 Sienna LE (FWD), '02 Subaru Outback, '02 Honda Odyssey EX

You are fine, if you can get 425+ miles after fill up then you have no problem on tank.
