2006 Sienna -Driver's front tapping noise at highway speed

At highway speeds c. 70+, I'm getting an intermittent tapping/ticking from what sounds like the drivers front area....seems less noticeable when coasting....definately not a knock. Anyone else ever have this and were able to figure out what it was? I appreciate any input.

    Thanks.

The first thing that you should do is check your roof rack crossbars and make sure that they are tight.

Thanks for the reminder. Will do. My Rav-4 did that when I first bought it.

Re: 2006 Sienna -Driver's front tapping noise at highway speed

If it is not the roof bars, there are two TSBs for the 06 with a "tick" noise.

SU004-05 FRONT SUSPENSION TICK NOISE: Some 2004 – 2006 model year Sienna vehicle customers may complain of a ticking type noise when driving at slow speeds. The ticking noise may sound like it is coming from the A-pillar, instrument panel, or windshield areas, but the noise may actually be coming from
the upper strut mounts to the body. EPT (Ethylene-Propylene Terpolymer) sealer should be added to the top of the left and right front strut assemblies to reduce the ticking noise.

T-SB-0141-10 Upper/Lower Windshield/Rear Glass Tick Noise: If a creak, tick, or rattle noise is heard at the top or bottom of the windshield, or at the top of the rear glass, the source of the noise may be the two stoppers bonded to the top of the windshield/rear glass, or the windshield retainers bonded to the lower edge of the windshield. This bulletin provides the recommended repair procedure to eliminate these types of noises from the windshield/rear glass area.

Both TSBs are about noise while driving at slow speed. I don't think that sped above 70 MPH means slow motion.

The TSB for the window tick noise does not mention only at low speed. It looks like <Narboza> just happened to paste the same text for both TSBs.
<Narboza> has previously posted the full TSB-0141-10 pdf, and then wrote:

Re: 2006 Sienna -Driver's front tapping noise at highway speed

I did a different search and found a third one. I fixed the text above for T-SB-0141-10.

T-SB-0094-10 Sliding Door Rattle While Driving: Some Sienna vehicles may exhibit a growling, ticking, clunking, or rattling noise near or around the left and/or right-hand sliding door when driving on rough road surfaces. Noise generated by contact between the striker plate and lock assembly on 2004 – 2006 model year Sienna vehicles has been reduced by adding a resin coating to the sliding door striker plate and sliding door lock assembly. The updated part applies to both manual and power sliding doors. Noise generated by contact between the male and female slide door stoppers on 2004 – 2010 model year Sienna vehicles has been reduced by redesigning the male stopper (foam type material was added to the male stopper). The updated part applies to both manual and power sliding doors.

I am not commenting on their applicability, just listing what Toyota has published. It is tough to diagnose a noise issue without hearing it.

Have you checked the wiper area for any dry leaves that maybe stuck and tapping on the windshield at high speeds?
    Just a thought.

I'm sorry that I haven't responded, I thought I noted to be advised when a response is posted in options. I appreciate the advice. I have to look at both of the TSB's. It is definately not from the sliding doors. It is absolutely coming from the drivers area....from knee level up. I have checked for leaves, loose hoses, etc. It is driving me crazy!

Continuing...looking at TSB-0141-10 pdf, I think that this may be my problem. I actually was looking today and the lower molding/seal, was loose. I am going to investigate further. Thank you very much for the advice so far!

The document is still available, but it is posted in the Insider area for Sienna Chat Supporting Members. That is likely why it is generating errors for you.

Conquistador74, please post if you find what it is. I have the exact same thing. It sounds like a leaf rattling, but it sounds harder than a leaf. It only makes the noise after getting up to 50 mph or so, it used to be only at higher speeds, so it appears to be getting worse. I have removed the plastic cover at the base of windshield and removed a leaf and maple seed out of there, but that was not it. Perhaps it is something that got into the front fender cavity? If so, to get the headlight assembly removed, are there more than the 2 fasteners you see on the top?

I too have the same sound. Its a rattle of sorts, sound like plastic on metal or metal on metal vibrating due to the wind at high speeds. I have not been able to diagnose the problem thus far. I knew a guy who worked at the Chrysler Minivan plant who told me that line workers would place junk inside cavaties of the car and create these mysterious and annoying sounds - just to mess with people. When the weather gets warmer I'll start taking stuff apart and looking. If any does find a solution - please let me know!

Update- the sound appears to have dissipated...for now. I'm now dealing with leaking power steering lines..apparently the steering system was a "known problem"....i'm on my 3rd rack and pinion. I never knew there was a problem with the first 2...the dealer found them leaking and has replaced them under warranty.
