Battery suddenly discharging on '99 XLE

Occasionally the battery on my 99 XLE discharges very quickly. In the most recent case it was started (with no issues) and driven twice in the morning for short journeys and then after being parked and left for 15-20 minutes the battery was virtually dead (central locking worked but only clicking noise when trying to start). After a AAA jump start the van drove normally and has been fine for a couple of days. Interestingly the battery was checked when it was serviced by Toyota a few days before and was found to be fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions? What could be draining the battery so quickly but only very intermittently? Is there a way of tracking the problem down? Could this simply be a battery problem - can they deteriorate that rapidly?

    Thanks

How old is your battery? It sounds like you should do a load test on it to see what the state of the battery is.

How long did you drive the van after the battery was jump started?

I checked youtube and there was a post about fixing a battery by using epsom salts. You may want to try that. Do you have access to a trickle charger to charge the battery slowly as well?

You might try checking the terminal connections between the battery and the connectors on the cable. The dealer may not have tighten them enough to make good consistent contacts.

Thanks. The battery is not that old, maybe 18 months. The van was driven for about 15-20 minutes AFTER the jump start and has been fine since (a few days). We have had this problem a few times before where is it drained and then fine after a jump start. This time is interesting because (1) the battery was checked a few days before by Toyota service and shown to be fine and (2) the van was driven twice prior to the battery draining and it had only been parked for less than 30 minutes....

Get yourself a battery terminal cleaner like this one to keep the terminals nice and clean. http://www.harborfreight.com/battery...ner-94450.html Also use dielectric grease or vasoline to coat the battery terminals. Regards, JC.
