Tow with regular fuel? - 2000 Sienna

    Hi,

I have a 2000 Sienna and I bought it about 1 month ago. Absolutely love the vehicle!

It's got 80K on it. The original owner recommended running it on 87 octane. I have done that for a while, but noticed pinging on freeway onramps when I lean on it. So, I moved up to 89 octane, and I haven't noticed any pinging.

But, with the rigors of towing, which I haven't done yet with this vehicle, I was assuming I should run it on premium 91 octane. I was wondering if anyone is towing on regular without any problems.

    Thanks

I have a 99 Sienna that I towed a Coleman Taos with and always used 89 octane with no problems.

I'm more familiar with our second-generation (2004) Sienna, but I think that the same principles apply. If the engine does not have any problems with knock (ping, preignition), and is not taking action (such as retarding ignition) to prevent it, then higher octane is not needed, and doesn't do any good (or harm, except costing more).

I guess the difficulty is assessing whether or not the engine is taking any action to prevent knock; a loss of power or efficiency would be hard to judge since driving with the heavy load of a trailer reduces performance and increases fuel consumption anyway.

I am not aware of any knock issues with our Sienna, including while towing, so I continue to use only regular (87 to 89 octane) gas; my wife sometimes feeds it premium, and I'm not aware of any resulting effect.

It seemed in discussions in another forum that individual experiences vary, even with the same year of Sienna (and thus identical engine). Local conditions (including elevation), driving style, and perhaps even slight variations in the engines, could all explain different octane requirements if the engine design pushes the limits of regular gas.

The owner's manual requires a minimum of 87 octane but recommends 91 or higher. This engine is a 10.5:1 compression ratio which is relatively high for a gasoline engine. If you use 87 octane gas then all the engine does is retard the spark to compensate, which brings a lot of negative consequences to efficiency, fuel economy and power. From the owner's manual:

    Fuel type:
    Unleaded gasoline, Octane Rating 87
(Research Octane Number 91) or higher.
    For improved vehicle performance, the
use of premium unleaded gasoline with
an Octane Rating of 91 (Research Octane
Number 96) or higher is recommended.

I would suggest that in all conditions whether towing or not, you use at least 91 octane as the manual recommends. They aren't saying that just to cost you more money, it's directly related to the design of this engine. I generally buy the highest octane whatever that happens to be, 92 or 93. With the higher compression ratio the 1MZ-FE engine can make use of the increased octane (unlike most other engines).
