Another crash test - Sienna does well

My wife and two of our sons were rear ended today when they were at a complete stop. The police estimate the car that hit them was going 60 km/h or 35mph. The driver that hit them claims he fell asleep and he was charged with careless driving. The tow truck driver couldn't believe how far the rear of the van was pushed in. The front was also damaged from being pushed into the car in front of her. Everyone in the van sustained some soft tissue injury, but nothing too serious. Definitely glad they were in a large safe vehicle. Just wanted to share that these vans are great at protecting our families.

glad you are OK i was rear ended at about 35 mph also old lady did not see red light. I was fine for 5 days then could not move my neck, even if you think you are fine you should go see doctor. i was in rehab for about 3 months. It was workmans comp too which made it odd as I dealt with them and they got the $$ back from her insurance company.

The kids seem fine, my wife has some pain. They didn't see the crash coming and did not tense up on impact which the doctors attribute to the less severe injury. Happy that my third son that normally sits in the third row was not with them. We will be monitoring everyone for the next week or so to make sure there wan't any other injury.

Glad you are okay. Our 2011 was totaled in December. Also protected all of us very well. Replaced it with another sienna.

Picking up a 2012 identical to our 2011 this Friday. After driving a Dodge Grand Caravan rental, we appreciate the Sienna more than we realized.

How was the rear end damage? Specifically, how did the third row seats fare in the crash? I've always wondered how safe the third row seats are in a rear end crash.

The third row seats held up very well. There wasn't any damage to the third row, though the storage area behind them was badly damaged. I think in a rear end collision, if you are hit on the bumper as in our collision, the protection is very good. If it were an SUV or truck with a different bumper height, the damage would be very different.

Thanks for the response. Thats very interesting. Where I live, we have a bunch of SUV's and lifted trucks that tailgate and drive as if they were nascar drivers. Makes me think twice about putting my kids in the third row. I wonder if you were to carry a lot of cargo behind the third row, that cargo would push into the third row, causing significant damage to the third row. .
