My customers have an 03 Honda Odyssey with 98K miles on it. Yesterday the check engine light came on and today when my customers drove it my customers noticed that it revved a lot before shifting into the next gear. And a couple of times after stopping at a light or a stop sign it wouldn't go when my customers stepped on the accelerator Car Diagnostic Tools. It just sounds like the wheels are spinning but it doesn't want to go. Any clues? My customers really don't want to replace a transmission right now. Someone please tell me that's not what it is!

A Honda Odyssey with a Sienna drive train? I wouldn't know how to diagnose that issue.

Definitely sounds like a transmission problem, especially combined with the fact that Odysseys around that time are famous for failing transmissions. What was the check engine light for?

Not where I would go for advise on an Ody, buy hey, to each his own.

It predates me, but it's not that uncommon to have a "direct competitor's" section for those that wish to engage in 'compare and contrast' discussions. But it's not meant for trouble Q & A.

I can tell you first hand, as a prior owner of an Odyssey ('99) that there was a well documented issue with the transmissions on 2nd gen (1999-2004) Honda Odyssey. Class action lawsuit yielded an extended warranty from Honda NA. My trans died about 4 months and 20K miles out of this extension, of course. New trans at 145K, and traded the Ody in with 230K for a new Sienna.

You should read the CEL, but those symptoms are identical to mine back then. (The final stage-stuck in a low drive gear with a burning oil smell- is just around the corner). As for options to trans replacement, there are a few (all bad): hook up a team of horses and sit on the hood, or just shift it into neutral, and get out and push. When that flywheel dissolves, little bits go everywhere in the trans and jam up everything inside.

So, why IS there an Ody page on the Sienna forum? Maybe to give former Ody owners bad flashbacks!
