2004 Sienna - Laser cruse control problems

3572 Views 9 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  azucho98
The laser cruise module on my 2004 Sienna failed a few months ago - After it failed I was able to put the cruise into "Normal" mode while the van was stopped. Apparently doing this bypasses the laser/distance module and prevents the E3 error code.

Now for some unknown reason, I can't put it in Normal mode when stopped. As soon as I turn the cruise ON I get an E3 error. Does this mean something else has failed?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Can you put it into 'Normal' mode while going down the road? You turn the cruise on and push the cruise lever in toward the dash for a few seconds to change the mode. Are you saying that even this method will not work? If so, it could be your sensor that has failed. Mine will 'fail' if I am driving into the sun because the sensor is overwhelmed by the intense rays.

The laser/distance module failed about 6 months ago - after it failed I was always able to put the cruise into "normal" mode when the van was stopped by pushing the lever toward the dash. Now I get an E3 error as soon as I turn the cruise ON.

Any idea why? Have a feeling something else failed :(
Sure sounds like your laser sensor has failed. As in expensive.

When you say the van is 'stopped' when you try it, is it in 'park' or in 'drive'? I have read that the van must be in 'drive' and brake pressed before it will go into normal cruise.

I don't think this mattered before - Previously I could turn ON the cruise when stopped and in park. I'll try putting it in drive with foot on brake and post back the results.

Ok - so with van in drive and foot on brake I can put the cruise in Normal mode. However, I receive a E3 error the instant I move forward. :(
With the cruise in 'norm', the system *should* ignore the laser sensor/transmitter part of it. At least that is my speculation.
So maybe thats a clue about the problem being with the CC ECU. Maybe it is as simple as a connector issue? One can only hope. I would locate the CC unit and pull the connectors, clean them, re-install them and retry. There is probably a scan tool out there that might tell you precisely what the ECU is unhappy about.

No luck - I unplugged and inspected the connectors - all in great condition.

I see there is a cruise relay for an 04 Sienna - is it possible it could be bad?

Just got back from a 650 mile trip - no cruise was torture!
Laser cruse won't work if the windshield wiper in on, was it raining?

The laser module is bad - it failed a while ago. I used to be able to put the cruise in normal mode (which bypasses laser module). Now I can't even do that.
