I have a 2005 sienna and for the past year or so whenever I put the car into reverse there would be an obvious clunk. We installed a new spindle on the front passenger side about a year ago. Recently when I was driving down the freeway I noticed that something felt funny under the car like there was possibly something wrong with one of the wheels. It felt so strange that I almost wondered if one of the wheels might fall off or at least if one of the tires was flat. I arrived at my destination after about five minutes. I parked the van and went and handled my business after walking around the vehicle and looking at all the tires and not seeing anything wrong. A few minutes later I got in the car and started driving down the road. All of a sudden there was a very loud sound and feeling like something very heavy dropped under the bottom of the van. At that moment I can't remember if I put the van into park so that I could see what had happened or if suddenly the van had just lost the ability to drive forward. Now whenever I shift into drive or reverse the car won't go into gear. The engine runs normally . I ended up having to push the car around the he corner while it was running and I noticed that when I pushed the car backward there was a very alarming grinding sound as if something was hitting the engine while the car was being pushed backward even just a few feet backwards. I pushed it forward for several blocks without any problems at all. I'm sure this must be something obvious especially based on whatever it was that was making the sound when pushed backwards. Also I forgot to mention that before this occured we were planning on installing a new spindle on the driver's side since it was starting to squeal and show similar symptoms as the passenger side had displayed. I have already checked the linkage cable under the dash and it is still connected so that's not the problem. The guy at the auto parts store said maybe something chipped off of the gear box. Thanks in advance for any insight or advice you may have as I have no experience with any issues of this nature.

transmission or differential. drain the oils, see if you find metal. If you do, that's the issue. if it's not going into drive, the clutches are probably shot. DO NOT drive the car any more, and even try shifting. it is probably transmission rebuilt time. The reverse clunk was the indicator.

That's a good idea. I will do that and post the results.

If you can physically hear noises even just pushing it have you gone underneath to look at any obvious damage or something being out of place?
I Will look again. I'm going to take a closer look at where the repair was done for the front wheel bearing and see if something might have popped out of place.
