Hi everyone! Hope you've been well. Just wanted to get some great minds regarding my mother in law's van. Recently she experienced overheating. So here is what happen according to her. While driving on a 45 speed road my daughter that something popped infront of the van, then they went to a drive thru church to order chicken. While paying on the window, my mother in law saw a lot of coolant leaking underneath, she continue to drive the van maybe for a mile then the temp gauge goes up and that is where she stopped to the side and turn off the engine. Van was towed to our house.

The next day, we replaced the thermostat and the plastic housing where the radiator hose goes and upon filling up with coolant and starting the engine we are hearing a rattling noise from the engine that gets a little louder when accelerating. What could be the cause of this and how can we fix this as this van is my MIL service picking up my daughter to and from school. Thanks in advance.

Sixto, its not a church . Just like Popeyes its a brand, Churche's chicken. You may not be familar with it as it may not be in your area.

Like others have said, hard to know without more specifics. My front exhaust heat shield rattled for a few years before completely falling off.

I'm more worried about the spontaneous coolant leak. Often times, unless your hose was really that worn, hoses don't just pop, and even if the thermostat had failed, I wouldn't expect that. If the new thermostat doesn't do the trick, a water pump would probably be in order (and while you're at it, when was the timing belt last changed?).

Water pump. Replace the pulley bearings while you are at it. My experience is with a 2013.

The subject says 2006 so it’s a 3MZ. Replacing the water pump isn’t trivial.

I haven’t been on this forum long but I don’t recall reading about rattling 3MZ water pumps. Is that a thing with 2GR water pumps?

It could be anything, really. There's no way to know. Something "popped infront of the van"? As in, you heard a pop sound or something impacted the front of the van? You'd need to try to identify generally where the noise is coming from. If you have a short length of garden hose, you can isolate the general location of the sound. Just be careful that you don't hurt yourself or damage the engine by touching a hot or moving part.

Thank you everyone for all the replies. I tried checking it again yesterday and verified that it rattles only when pressing the accelerator pedal with gear not in idle. Btw there is also a check engine light. So since there is a check engine light, MIL decided to have it checked at the dealership and They say that the culprit is a damage air filter hose that causes the engine to run lean hence the rattling is only when pressing the accelerator pedal. What you guys think?

Yup. Well, or metallic clanging. Here’s my 2GR-FE water pump on my 2014 Sienna when it went bad at 113k miles (as mentioned, NOT the OP’s engine):

I could believe it. Honestly, if the dealer says it's a damaged intake boot, just have them replace it. It should be about $50-100 (plus an hour of diagnostic labor). If it's damaged, it needs to be replaced and if it doesn't eliminate the issue, they can keep looking.
