2012 Sienna Popping Break Sound

Hi Guys, I'm a newb to this Sienna Site. 1st Post!

I just bought a 2012 Toyota Sienna LE for our family. Once we HIT 1,000 miles I have started to notice a popping sound when brakeing. If I'm traveling around 35mph and lightly apply the brakes as if coming to a stop sign there is a loud pop. Does anyone know what this is? I'm haveing it serviceD right now so just wanted any opinnions before I speak with the Dealership Mechanics.

Ok so my wife just got back from the dealership and they said that this is a common complaint. Wow Really!? Apparently the Brake Pads Shift and this is why its makeing a loud popping sound. I can't believe I paid this amount of money for a car and the brakes sound like they are going to snap off.
Why did this just start happening and why didn't it do this when the can was new. WTF and shouldn't there be a solution to this?
I'd get a second opinion from another dealer. Sounds like BS to me.

i second the second opinion - the explanation does not sound plausible.
Does it happen every time, or only the first time that you apply the brake after changing direction?

Every time? Something is really wrong. But I had a 'first time after changing direction' issue on both my Subaru and Honda. Initially I was told 'normal', but eventually there were TSB issues on both vehicles. Basically it is a pad retainer spring issue that allows the pads and floating caliper to slam back and forth a bit too hard with no damping that would muffle the metal-on-metal bang.
Thanks for the response's. I am definatly going to get a second opinion and thank you fibber2 for pointing out a possible spring issue. I had a feeling it was something like this but couldn't figure out the proper verbage.

I did contact Toyota Corp. about the problem and being blown off by the dealership mechanic. They said that they stand behind there dealer's 100% and if they say it's no big deal than it is. I said yes but there is a problem, the BRAKES are makeing a weird sound. The BRAKES are what stops the van that my family is riding in.

I'll let you know what happens. Thanks Again
Did anyone figure out what the issue was? We have the same click on our 2014 (w/40k miles and the brakes had been replaced before we took ownership). It only makes the sound when going forward, and usually over 10mph and under 35mph. It is a single click/pop usually on both sides in the front occurring together or sometimes only on side. I just took off all 4 wheels and checked to see if the calipers were loose, and how much pad was left, which was plenty and that matches the prev. owner service records Toyota has online).

I saw a youtube video mentioning a TSB on 2011-2014 Sienna brake pads and also a modification to some plastic to increase airflow to the brakes. Anyone have that TSB #? The modification has not been done to my van (cutting plastic to make air dam larger), so I'm not sure if the pads are the newer style either. Anyway to tell?
Thanks, the clicking is annoying and I just hope it isn't damaging anything else.

When you have had this issue happen did the brakes ever fail? My cousin's van is doing the same thing. 2012 Toyota Sienna also but they actually failed once and they rear ended someone. Any resolution yet?

Just to follow-up, but my dealership told me the same thing about "pad shift" and it was considered "normal".... Not in any of the 7 other Toyotas I've owned though.

I've never had the brakes fail, but I will still be looking for a way to get rid of the sound. Maybe some replacement retaining springs?

I've had this condition on other vehicles. Usually, the root cause is excessive clearance between pad and caliper, or a missing component like a caliper shim or a shim installed backwards. The times I experienced it was after a pad change, usually with aftermarket pads where the metal plate was manufactured 'wrong'. In each case, I took the pads back and exchanged them for different brand/line to resolve the issue. Now, the above presumes that the caliper slot is not excessively worn, and that the caliper is not 'sticky', etc.

I also experienced a similar symptom that happens only on the first stop after reversing. This one is 'semi-normal', but can be minimized by ensuring the slider pins and pads are clean and don't 'drag'.
