I just told them all the symptoms without mentioning tsb. When the advisor got my signatures then I said that one of my friends had the same problem and his dealer updated some ecu software and that fixed the problem. After waiting for 30 mins they said they updated the software.

Remember that a TSB is not the same as a Recall. A recall comes with a mandate - it will be done. An airbag will be replaced whether you've shown it contains shrapnel or not!

A TSB is a factory advisory to the dealership that *IF* a customer complains of a specific set of issues, *THEN* the factory will process a warranty claim and reimburse the dealer (usually poorly...) for their time and materials. If the service write-up doesn't include the use of certain key words that fit the problem as described by the TSB, then the dealer eats it. They are always on notice to not just perform an update unless it's been shown to be warranted.

So yes, let them know that you are aware of the TSB. But make it clear that you've been struggling with / annoyed by / disappointing in the performance / so unhappy that you've been thinking of dumping the POS, whatever... since you bought the vehicle. It hesitates, seems unsure of what gear to be in, revs way too high, etc. AND YOU WANT IT FIXED!

My GTA dealer said to bring a copy of the TSB at my first oil change, they will scan it and see if its in need of the ECU reflash.

Since I took delivery last Sept it was probably within the first batch of 2017s made and would most likely require it.
Brought the van in this past Saturday for the 8,000km service, mentioned the symptoms in the TSB and they created the work order.

They found the update, and installed it and about an hour later was on my way.

Hi all you 2017 owners. So the big change from 2016 to 2017 was the updated engine and extra transmission gear.
I'm wondering what sort of fuel economy you are getting.
I've been looking at some of the Chrysler Pacifica forums, and they are reporting very good fuel economy with their new 9 speed transmission.
Please and thank you!

Hello everyone, I am in Toronto with a 2017 Sienna, have complained to the dealer about the car being sluggish off the line, rev high and car not really accelerating. Dealer said they drove it and have checked in on computer and everything is up to standard. Would you please give me the TSB number for Canada so I could bring in to my dealer to have them update the software. Much appreciated and super thanks.

For Canada: T-TCI-4506

Thanks fibber2 for the info. My Sienna is currently with the dealer, so I gave them the Service Bulletin US number and they couldn't find anything since I am in Toronto. So I called again and gave them the Canadian number you provided and hopefully they can find it. Anyone have it updated in Toronto please kindly tell me which dealership you have it done at so in case my dealership still couldn't locate the update. Thanks everyone and glad I found this website. Will report back if my dealer can locate the update and the driving impression afterwards. (if I do get the update).

Does anyone know past what "manufacture" date Toyota would have included the new shift-logic?

TSB appears to be dated Feb 2017, so is it reasonable to assume anything post Feb would have had the update already made at the factory?

I can confirm that this is not a update software, the dealer claimed that this is a recall. My car was produced in september 2016, big difference after install new software :)

I would agree. The change must have occurred on the production line before they got the word out to dealers. By how much (weeks?) is unknown.

Ah, no... A notice of intended recall must be filed with the NHTSB and the reason/remedy approved before a Recall is announced. All affected owners then receive a letter with the announcement. This is a TSB (T-SB-0187-17) as the notification ONLY went to dealers and NOT owners, but it's true that it's a bit more complex in that it impacts Federal Emissions.

To remain a TSB (and not become a recall....), the vehicle had to PASS Fed Emissions before the TSB is applied, and STILL PASS emissions after. That means driveability only with negligible impact on fuel economy or emissions. If Toyota was able to confirm that with the Feds, as they apparently did, then it remains a TSB but with the extension of time/mileage to match the Fed Emissions Warranty (8/80) rather than the standard 3/36.

Milton Toyota did mine at my 8,000km service.
I purchased my van there last summer.

Make sure the work order accurately states the issue; rough shifting, shifts at high rpms, hunting for correct gear, sluggish from stop.

They drove my van, then scanned it. They found and installed the update.

I had mine updated. It seems to shift a little better/quicker...but i never had much issue before.

I asked the dealer to check my software update, and he said that it is not an update but a recall on the software, I asked if he is sure and he just confirmed the recall. Maybe he something confused, important that it is better than it was.

Did you get a Recall notice in the mail? Unless something has changed, you will not.... While you might not be happy with how your van was performing, it was still considered to be within 'acceptable' parameters. That's why only the dealers got the notification. If you come in and complain, they will take care of you. If you don't complain, you will remain on that revision of software forever. That's the nature of a Technical Service Bulletin.

I went to the dealer and asked to check and update the software, he checked in the computer and said it did not update but recall,I have no idea where he took this information, surprised me but did not discuss more.

Does that mean that your dealer did an update, or recall regarding the TSB ? Or did they do 'nothing' ?

Thanks fibber2 and Rajin929 for responding to my posts earlier. However, my dealer told me they search for my vehicle and they couldn't find any update. They said my van has the most up-to-date software installed. I took delivery of the van in Dec 2016 and I have all the symptoms described in the TSB. I told my dealer both the US and Canada TSB# already but no luck. Is there a way to tell if my van has the updated software or not? I live in Markham area in Toronto and I would drive to Milton Toyota to have it updated if I have to. However, it would be nice if someone has it done closer to Markham area and direct me as such. I know I promised to post driving impression after the update, but seems like my luck is running out. thanks all again and drive safe.

You don't have to go all the way to Milton Toyota there are closer dealers in the GTA to you that can be tried if you are not happy with your dealer. Don Valley North, Scarborough Toyota, Toyota On The Park, Ken Shaw all pretty decent when it comes to service. We got ours from Clarington Toyota out in Bowmnaville/Courtice area and they are great to deal with (family has bought 5 toyotas from them so far). We just picked up our '17 Sienna last night and it drives great no power or acceleration issues but it was built at the beginning of May 2017.

PS there is also Whitby Toyota, have heard good things when it comes to service.
