2018 Carplay Software Retrofit

20142 Views 46 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  2006SiennaLE
Hi all- I didn't see a thread (or missed it) but thought I would offer my contribution. I retrofited Apple Carplay in my 2018 Sienna via the free software update DIY. As some of you may know, Toyota released this retrofit in early 2019 for dealers to install. Thus far, all dealers I talked to wanted to charge an hours worth of service rather than retroing as a courtesy.

In any event, here are the links to instruction and files!

2018 Sienna TSB
T-SB-0057-19 Premium Audio – Panasonic
T-SB-0055-19 Base Audio – Pioneer
T-SB-0053-19 Audio Plus -Denso-Ten

Update Files for Sienna
2018 Sienna Premium Audio – Panasonic
2018 Sienna Base Audio – Pioneer
2018 Sienna Audio Plus – Denso-Ten

So I have a 2018 Sienna SE with the Preferred Equipment Package (not an SE Premium trim). The description of the audio system in the Preferred Equipment Package from the 2018 Sienna brochure says "Entune™ 3.0 Premium Audio with Dynamic Navigation and App Suite". Does this mean I have the Panasonic Audio system?
go to ur radio menu and tell me the software version, from there i can tell u which package

Attached is one picture I took of the model information. Under "Softare Information" it says this software was developed by or for Panasonic so I'm pretty sure I have the Panasonic system.

I work in information technology so I'm hoping that I can do this upgrade myself. Funny thing is that I don't need Apple Carplay because I use an Android phone but the rest of my family does. On a side note, I'm so glad Toyota is finally including Android Auto in their cars. I still couldn't believe they included support for Amazon Alexa before Android Auto. I would love to have been in the meeting where that decision was made to see how they came to that decision.
It came down to costs and licensing. Ironically the Hondas these years supported android but not carplay.

they do have aftermarket piggy back box android systems but the source channel is the aux

That's interesting. I figured Toyota being the world's largest automaker would have some leverage to negotiate a good licensing deal with Google for Android Auto.

You can for sure. It's a simple firmware upgrade. Once the firmware is on the USB stick, the software update will find it and update itself.
Here's the link from the ToyotaNation forum (it has Sienna files too):
If you follow the TSB instructions, you'll be fine.

Thank you for sharing. I love Apple Carplay and use it exclusively in my 2019 Avalon. I wish Toyota had offered this same update for our 2018 Highlander Limited Hybrid Platinum......
Thanks @bmwstephen. I was able to successfully do the retrofit. It was very straightforward but it takes about an hour so be prepared to leave your car running for an hour while parked. The only strange part of the instructions was cycling your headlights on and off 3 times within 3 seconds.
I just purchased a CPO 2018 Sienna SE and one of my conditions of the purchase was that the dealer needed to upgrade the firmware to have CarPlay. When the dealer attempted to upgrade the firmware, the head unit kept freezing so they ended up ordering a new head unit through Panasonic. This new head unit came with the CarPlay firmware preinstalled. I don’t know if anything is different in the unit (hardware or otherwise) but I’m definitely happy to have CarPlay without having to pay for it.
Does anyone know if there is an update to put Android auto on 2020 sienna?
Saw these posts, got all the files and info and was ready to install/upgrade our 2018. Read a few reviews and unless I'm missing something, it appears to just mirror the cell phone screen and not all functions are available in some apps.
We have Wi-Fi and my co driver uses her tablet. Not sure there is any advantage to adding CarPlay.
Am I missing something?

It doesn't exactly mirror the screen. I primarily use it for navigation which is a lot better on a big screen since we don't use a separate tablet.
Also, the CarPlay functionality itself is optional. There's no real harm to upgrade.
Does this OEM retrofit software work on all 2018 Sienna's including the base L trim?

It looks like yes because the OP included links to files for all 3 types of radios. You just have to identify which one you have and then use the files for that one.

Welcome.

I believe this update is only available to US model vehicles. Double-check your radio model ID, to make sure the update is applicable. See the TSBs.
