Another thing that has me worried is that I just checked the Toyota site, and if you try to build a Sienna on the configuration, it now only allows you to pick FWD for the drivetrain…which is really weird. Does that mean they’re going to stop producing AWD variants for the rest of the 23MY?? As we know they do some funky stuff like that in the current environment they make decisions on the fly due to inventory and so forth. Also you go check their inventory and the amount of AWDs you can count with the fingers on one hand. Specially it lists inventory on “build phase” and like none of those are AWD.

Try a different zip code. I see AWDs for ours - 22315. It is strange that Toyota.com filters choices based on zip code.

Probably it is related to different distributors. The different distributors may limit the number of configurations. Especially in the southern US, AWD is tough to get.
Ahh I see, thanks for the responses, this makes more sense.

Subieyoda - why do you regret putting down a deposit? Isn't it refundable? During my shopping experience, I was trying to put down as many deposits as possible. There was only 1 dealer (Chula Vista) willing to take a deposit and said it would take 5-6 months. It took me less than a month of offering slightly above MSRP to pick up my new Sienna from Manhattan Beach. Coincidently, Chula Vista provided me with allocation that same week! Now i'm waiting to get my refund back.

technically yes, they said the deposit is refundable, but they were also telling me basically that if and when that could happen, I essentially better have a good reason. I told them that my family and I move around every 2-3 years and that I wasn’t really in that much of a rush, both statements are true, and my rep said that in that case then I shouldn’t have a problem if I have to cancel because I’m moving away; but also said that lot of people canceling for bs reasons and that it’s bad for them. So, I took that to mean that they could push back if it’s something they don’t find reasonable. And while I can go in there and raise hell if I have to, to get my deposit back, I rather not go through that unless I really have to. It’s only been 3 months since I put my deposit and I don’t need the Sienna right this second. It’s more just me looking around and seeing exactly what I want available not too far from me and hence why I regret putting down my deposit as it ties me to that one dealer when I could’ve just shopped around for what I want when it pops up like it has been.

Hope you have it in writing that it is refundable and used credit card for deposit.

Else, could indeed take some shouting to get back.

Not sure it’s in writing. If that becomes a problem, then I guess it’ll be my fault that I have to overcome if it comes down to needing a refund. But the rep did say they just gave a lady a refund because she had to move away so given that I move for official reasons then I’m hoping I won’t have issues if I don’t have my car by 2024 when I’ll probably have to move again.
Also, yes, credit card was used for the deposit.

At one point I had deposits down all over the place until I realized I was wasting my time dealing with so many dealerships and started pulling them back. I only had one dealer drag their feet on my refund so after two weeks of calling; I called back acting like a new customer, recorded the salesman confirming for me their deposits are refundable then hung up. Called back, let the finance manager know I've been waiting two weeks, have them on recording confirming these were always refundable and that I'm giving them an hour until I just go ahead and put the dispute in with my CC company and do the charge back. It was refunded before we even hung up

In your case, screw them "needing a good reason". I don't need to tell them jack about my personal life. They said it was refundable, so refund it. I would have totally called them out on that BS "it makes us look bad" line... lol. Oh please, how exactly? When they refund the money they also get refunded their processing fee so whats the problem here? You tell Becky to put down her phone for 2 minutes, go into the system and refund this guys deposit and we're all done.

BTW, you'll hear the "in writing" thing a lot but oral is just fine for these cases in regards to you being told it was refundable. Now a dealer saying they are non-refundable is trickier. Some states there's no such thing as a non refundable deposit for goods that were never delivered but in my case, states like Texas very much do allow dealerships to have non-refundables though even then I really doubt any dealer would go after someone for doing a charge back on one. In my research on the topic it seems most judges if it came to that would look at the contract and decide if the dealer actually took any real damages from the customer pulling out of the agreement, if not..then they can get bent. Personally, that's not a situation I'd put myself in though. I had one "non-refundable" down for a 2023 sport Odyssey but the Sienna would up showing up first and the wife was sick of waiting and said we're taking it. The Honda guys refunded it for me though anyways. They just use that crap to try and lock people into their dealer and stop them from shopping around, they don't really care long as someone buys it.. which, someone will.

Cypress XLE AWD. Mid Atlantic. No packages, but did include a couple add ons like roof rails and carpet floor mats and a cargo tray and a first aid kit, all of which were beyond my control.

Paid MSRP, which ended up like this:
  • $41,850 XLE AWD base price
  • $494 accessories
  • $1,215 delivery/processing/handling
So, $43,559 MSRP. Tax, tags, and title pushed it to $46,900 out the door.

All in all, very happy. I had to drive an hour to get this price but that's nothing compared to some of the stories I've read about flying a couple states away. Prices in my city all had a markup - some seemed reasonable ($1500) and others insane (a local dealer is pricing FWD LEs for $48K, and higher trims with even more or a markup).

This one kind of fell in my lap, too - this guy was the very first salesperson I spoke to a month ago, but at the time he didn't have anything to sell because all the allotments were spoken for. However someone decided not to buy their Sienna and had their deposit refunded, so he and his coworkers had a contest to see who could sell it the fastest. He called me first and the rest is history.

I still have a deposit on a other van, just because I didn't want to put all my eggs into one basket. I gotta call this other salesperson up and break his heart tomorrow.
What dealer did you buy from?
