My kids love that sound. They think it sounds like a spaceship. Lol

Personally it doesn't sound that loud to me. If anything else I think the sound of the engine is louder than the motor IMHO.

The amount of loud noise coming from the motor into the cabin area gets on my nerves on this vehicle.
Are you asking about the electric motor or the gas engine?

I have never even touched a hybrid Sienna, let alone ridden in one, so I have never heard anthing from which to start guessing, just thought I would clarify terms so everybody knew which one you are asking about.

its not a racecar, so stop driving it like one, and the gas engine will quiet down on its own. if you are constantly hitting the pedal hard, its gonna keep the motor in the "torque" band for the CVT, which means it runs at like 3500 RPMs. you don't need to hear the engine to accelerate, it will still accelerate if you aren't mashing the pedal to the floor.

Some owners find it very loud, others say quiet.

Personally find it somewhat loud so it's a continuum of noise level perception.

With all the quality issues these days wonder if Toyota forgot to put insulation in some of the Siennas??

Accelerate like there is egg under the pedal or try in Sport mode.

If you're only refrering to the engine, compared to my RX350 which has a 3.5L engine, similar to the previous Gen of Sienna, I found the Gen 4 Sienna is super loud when the gas engine is trying hard to accelerate, especially at high speeds like over 100km/h or climbing a steep with all families. Besides, when the gas engine starts to work, it's always loud.

With that said, other than the engine noise, the cabin is a little bit quiter than the KIA Carnival on hwy speed.

I have seen many of these references to a "loud engine" and have to wonder.

Is it really that loud, or is it just a typical 4-cylinder noise?

I still vividly remember switching from my 4-cylinder Previa to a 6-cylinder Sienna and how much quieter the Sienna was. Trim levels were similar, so I can not attribute the quiet to any sound deadening, most likely it was the V-6 engine.

Fortunately, I am non in the market for a new Sienna, but am curious anyway.

It is LOUD for sure under load.
The loud is not that you know it's powerful, it's kinda lemme worry about the engine and think:
"Are u OK?"
"Can you do it?"
"Should I release the gas padel and let you have a break?"
"Why you are charging the battery while climbing the steep when it's almost full?"

Why is it so dang loud?
I'm curious. What other car do you drive ? Im just trying to get a reference of what you consider "loud". My other car is a 2007 Mercedes ML320 SUV and its really quiet inside. The Sienna is not that far off. But i know the Sienna is a 4 cylinder engine so i expected it to be a little louder during heavy acceleration (but still not that loud). What is loud is my Subaru STi with a Greddy exhaust.

There's a free app on android or iphone. why dont you measure the noise inside the Sienna and post results here how many decibels you consider as "loud".

"Should I release the gas padel and let you have a break?"
Some have suggested that this is intentional and by design, especially after finding a feature when connected via OBD port that is called "Engine Sound Enhancement" which intentionally pipes in more engine sound into the cabin, and even more when Eco mode is selected. The idea is that the sound helps remind us to stop pushing the gas pedal so hard and that's exactly what Toyota wants from the driver to encourage efficiency.

Sound is piped in to make us more fuel efficient???

If that "feature" can not be disabled, either legally or otherwise, I would not consider a newer Sienna.

I have heard of other manufacturers doing that for their performance cars, but this is supposed to be a bit of a luxury van, not a hot rod. In MY feeble mind, I would have added MORE sound insulation to dampen the inherent differences that make a 4-cylinder seem louder, not amplified it and piped it in.

I drive a V8 BMW M3 with performance exhaust and I find this loud. I am not sure if it is the engine or motor to be honest.

As for other comments about driving slower or to not mash on the pedal, lol give me a break man...You guys trying to take home the prize for the douchiest reply? You gotta get on the gas to get it up to speed to merge on the highway.

I checked on the Carista app and it does not show this option for 22 XSE to turn on or off the Engine Sound Enhancement or the ANC.

Even my wifes 80 year old grandpa who never wears his hearing aids said something about it being unusually loud, it is noticeable. I have driven plenty of 4 cylinders in my early days, never a hybrid though.

LOL, I can merge onto the freeway at 65 mph barely out of the eco zone. Y'all need some longer on ramps or better technique or something.
