That window from the inside, looks rather small.

Are there any parents here who have their convertible car seats in the third row that can comment on how is it for outward visibility, at least from the child's perspective? Do they complain about not being able to see outside or feeling cramped?

That is one of the big concerns I have as I wait for my minivan.

Thanks!

My grandson LOOVES my 2023 Sienna XLE. He brags about it and wants his parents to get one also. He is 8 years old. No, he does not complain about the rear window visibility, in fact, he loves to sit in the third row seat, but he did not say why. Of course, not all children are the same. He can/does put the 3rd row seats up, even tho I fold down the third row, for better visibility from the rear. I think he loves sliding the second row seat way forward, so, when he sits in the third row, he has room to literally do jumping jacks in between second and third row. I folded my third row seats back down, and easily put in there a 65 inch flat screen TV. I was skeptical it would go, but it went with much room to spare. Just fold the third row seats down, and slide the second row seats forward, and in goes the monster TV. I think it would also go even in the box, and of course, the box is much larger than the tv without the box. It comes with about 5inches of styrofoam cushioning all the way around, making the box about 10 inches longer. It looks like the box would go in also. I have not yet tried a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the mini van, but, trust me, I will! I have only had the Sienna about 3 weeks.

The window is quite small. I can't imagine a young kid sitting in a seat where they could see around would enjoy it. We just did a long drive in ours through the storm, no complaints from my 11 year old. Our younger kids sit in the captain's chairs.

I will add: ONE reason I seleted the Sienna over others, is, when I was visiting another city, I stayed in a Hotel. Outside a lady had a newer Sienna, and she was obviously waiting for others. So, I spoke to her. SHE worked for the Post Office, and apparently retired there. She worked part time hauling people back and forth to airport from the Hotel. She explained that people always want to ride in the Sienna vs other cars, because its super comfortable. She says several ASK for the Sienna to transport them. Since "comfort" was high on my priority list, along with safety, this talk convinced me to get a Sienna. If I am considering a car, I often ask owners of one at the car wash or, wherever people are willing to speak about their car. The car wash is a great place, because, people who love their car often wash it frequently, like me. I have an unlimited monthly car wash membership, and usually wash it and vacuum it at least once a week, more often twice, or even 3x per week if it gets dirty. So I ask people about their cars as they are drying them off. You learn a lot. People will speak to you who would not necessarily post a review. Not everyone wants to do reviews. And, they will tell you exactly what they dont like about the car.

One Sienna owner said she "hated" the rear fold down DVD player system (it was a very high trim level, no doubt over 50k). She said it did not work, and the dealer was unable to make it work. Some tech issue. I did not get the expensive fold down DVD player system, but I did have one in an Escalade I bought a couple years ago. (No the Escalade was not new..they are over 100k new when well equipped). I had trouble with the Escalade fold down dvd player, but, a trip to the Caddillac dealer in Cincinatti resulted in a very experienced pro telling me how to make the thing work.

He explained the fold down dvd player's in Escalade are not made by Cadillac..and over the years, several companies made those for Caddy. And, making them work varied with the company which made them. My guess is that Toyota does not make DVD players, either.

The car wash Sienna lady said she loves the van, but bought a portable DVD player for the kids in the back, and they are happy with that. However, she was not happy that she paid over 50k and did not get a working dvd player. This said, she loved the rest of the van. Almost everyone who owns a car knows its glitches, and they all have em..when you own them long enough.
I especially like it when owners tell me what they "dont" like about the vehicle. Then, I can decide if that is important. And a fold down built in dvd player was a non issue, because I couldnt afford it anyway.

They all said they loved the room in the Sienna, the comfort, and the fuel economy. I have not yet spoken with someone who crashed their Sienna, but I feel extremely confident in Toyota's attention to details on the safety aspect. They put this tech (many airbags, adaptive cruise, forward collision alert, etc) in nearly all models, "not just" the expensive ones. That shows a committment level to safety, and not just for rich people buying the high trim levels.

Have you ever sat in one of those old Elementary school desks? I did, as an adult, and they seemed very small as an adult. I did not recall that, when I sat in them as a child. Yes, I went back to my old school and sat in the same desk. They felt small and cramped..the seat did not shrink, but I grew.
For that reason, I doubt you will get complaints from (small) children in the third row seat because the window is small. They will love the cup holders, and may even love they can charge their electronic devices back there, too, with USB charge ports. Oh, and they will also love "4 zone" heat, so. they can control their own. Oh, boy, do they love control, and dont like being controlled. The driver can "lock out" kids from opening the rear sliding doors, and I think that is important. I havent tried to see if the sliding doors could be opened while vehicle is in motion, but I do know there are settings which lock/unlock doors and you can probably change those, too.

I don't think there's a space issue, but imagine being in a convertible car seat where you're strapped in and really have limited ability to move your head and see what's going on around you. With the small window I think that would be a real issue for a young child (say, kids that are less than 4 or 5).

At least that's how I interpret the original question and think about it based on how my kids are.

If the kids are "cramped" into the seat, THEN they will notice the small window. When they have plenty of feet room and things to do such as electronic devices, the window hasnt been an issue for me or my grandkids. When I was a kid, I avoided looking out the window in the back seat, because I got car sickness. I cant explain it, but sitting in the back seat still can cause me to have car sickness, while riding or driving in the front does not. Stuff goes by real fast when viewing out the side window, not so fast when viewing the front window, because, from the front, you see objects from a large distance. From the side, you see objects relatively close speeding by.

The windows are much smaller vs other minivans.

If children like to look outside the windows then they will not like 3rd row. If however they are busy with colouring or on tablets then no issues.

My daughter is in a high back booster (so headwings, etc) in the third row and zero complaints about visibility or the window being small. She just gets annoyed that the kid in the middle row can have an open window when it's warm.

Bigger consideration is if your kid in the convertible seat can't do their own harness properly, climbing back there is gonna be annoying as all get out.

yep. That’s pretty much what I was Looking into. I have a 4 and 2 year old. One is forward facing, one is rear facing.

I’m thinking of just putting the forward facing one in the rear and the rear facing in the front
