2002 Sienna - Bought used - ABS, brake, and tire lights were on, had broken wire to abs module, bad wheel bearing/hub and sensor and harness all replaced at the mechanic... lights still on . They say it must be the abs control module.

Took it to toyota because abs control modules have to be programmed to the vin, toyota says its because of after market parts and I need to have it repaired at Toyota using toyota parts... says its not the abs control module or it would show up on the diagnostics, all that shows is the speed sensor/wheel hub/ foreign object so I need to have them do it. Then, they tell me Toyota no longer makes the parts and they would order the part from Napa... Had MY mechanic order a different one and try it... they got the most expensive one and it didnt change a thing. They told me they found a service bulletin to reprogram the ecu and to talk to Toyota about it.

With mine though, intermittently, the van will kind of jutter, then check engine light will come on, speedometer goes off, and the only codes are the one I mentioned above... then if I pull over, turn it off, and back on, the speedometer will work fine again and the check engine light will go off on its own until it happens again. They said its all related.... but no one can tell me how to fix it. I am willing to pay for them to fix it/ reprogram it, whatever, but they cant seem to figure it out. I just need to know what it is!

I would appreciate any info... and no, its not the brake fluid or parking brake switch or anything like that. It has been run through by mechanics.

Thank you,

Kim

I have a 2001 Toyota Sienna with 450,000 miles still going strong. I have a similar issue. The ABS and Tire pressure lights are on. An OBD2 code reader at your shop should be able to read if one of the speed sensors at the four tires or wiring is the problem . This can narrow things down. However, if the code reader can't read any faults its problably the the ABS unit itself Normally, when you first turn on the ignition lights on the dash go on without starting the car you should hear the ABS motor in the engine compartment making a humming sound that checks the system then shut off. If you don't hear this the ABS is toast. Toyota doesn 't make the unit any more and no one will fix these items. Presently it doesn't pay to put an aftermarket unit in the car. Your car 's brakes will work normally without the ABS.
