Auto Locking

16202 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  nurseman967
My 2006 Sienna had me second guessing myself recently. I needed to get something from inside the van, so I stepped out my back door, and unlocked the van with the remote, confirming that the parking lights blinked. A few minutes went by, then I went our the front door to go to the van to get what I needed, and it was locked. This has happened to me a couple of times now. My best guess is that when I remotely unlock the van, if I don't enter the vehicle within a set amount of time, it will relock itself.....Is this correct? How long is this interval? 30s, 1 min.? Thanks for any insight you have into this.

Yes, that's exactly what it does.

My 2004 owners' manual says 30 seconds.
Also upon exiting your van and closing the doors you can press the unlock button on the remote and it will lock on its own after about 30 seconds. Coool !

Mine is 30 seconds. I am not sure if it is adjustable. I don't think so.

I like it myself.
I am not sure, but I wanna respectfully say it **IS** adjustable (don't know if it is DIY or a dealer-visit). I think it is one of the old "customization" functions....??? ??? I recall it is either 30secs auto-delay locking, or NO auto locking...meaning you have to purposefully lock/unlock, but I might be wrong....??? ???

It is a "safety/convenience" measure in case you accidentally and unknowingly unlock the car by bumping the remote while you are walking away and you don't "notice".

Anyone??

YMMV.
Good Luck!! 8)
at first I like that auto lock feature
...until one day when it was raining so bad outside with the kids + stuffs on your hands. OH, we have to unlock it again

also we park our van inside the garage, one day we try to put the kids in the van, AGAIN, the doors were locked ??? ???
I understand the reasoning, and appreciate that the system designers were trying to make my vehicle more secure. On the other hand, it can be annoying when working as designed (if, for instance, I unlock the van for my wife, who then takes a long time to get around to opening the door and can't get in), and this interesting side-effect...

... really does not suit me. If I never hit the lock button, I don't want it to lock.

I would turn the feature off if that were convenient to do. Dealing with a dealership service department is not convenient, in my experience.

That has happened to me when inadvertently I have unlocked the van while leaving it unattended.

I have gotten into the habit of only unlocking when I am within 30 seconds from getting into the van. All it takes is to open one door (and close) to deactivate the self-locking mechanism.

If I want to disable the auto lock feature, I open and close a power sliding door for a moment using remote control.
Hi,

Section 6.2 of the owner manual has list of settings the dealer can modify including this one. Unfortunatly, the only options are 30, 60 (default) and 120 seconds and sorry to say you have to visit the dealer to do it - yuck... There are a couple of settings you can do on your own related to locking all doors when put the car in drive or 20km/h and when put back in park unlock all doors or just driver.

I agree this irriates my wife as well and what usually happens as Brian suggests open and close a door to get around it.

This must have been an addition after my 2004; my Section 6 (there's no 6.2) is Vehicle maintenance and care, and doesn't appear to have anything about custom settings. This is a good find (at least for the later years which have it) :)

I've done that... everything unlocks when I shift to Park. Anyone who has followed the procedure for this might appreciate that without a proper programming interface, it would be awkward to set up sequences to set all of the preferences that we might want to change. For vehicles including the navigation system, it would be nice if that interface were used to make all of these settings settable by the owner.

I'll scan and post 6.2 soon, but I don't how it applies to older gen 2 models.

sucks that you can't disable the "feature" completely; I find it a pain.
