so I have heard that others have gotten rid of those crappy OEM runflats that come on the 4WD siennas with tires of their choice and bought the compact spare that normally comes with the 2wd versions. Was going to do the same. However when I talked to dealership I was told that running the 17" compact spare would ruin the differentials because the OEM is 18" wheel.

any thoughts on this for those out there in the know?

The compact spare is only for very temporary use in emergencies and at low speeds to limp a few miles to the nearest tire repair facility. The circumference of generation three Sienna tires are similar whether they are mounted on 17", 18" or 19" inch wheels due to the profile of the tires (sidewall height) being different for each wheel size. For example, my Sienna Limited came with 18" wheels and 235-18/55 tires but I bought 17" wheels and 235-17/60 snow tires to use in winter to keep the speedometer accurate.

AWD and limited siennas have the same exact rim/tire size right? So find a spare for limited FWD models and you're good to go.
Check out the first sticky on the "general" subforum for the 3rd gen Sienna. It goes into detail everything you need to know about spare tires for the AWD Siennas. Basically, the FWD Sienna's spare is about 1" smaller diameter than the FWD Sienna's spare tire, which is okay I guess for the FWD model but not good for the AWD model (can void your warranty supposedly if they found out).

There's two different options if you want to get around that:

1.) use a slightly larger tire (I used a spare tire for a Honda CRV, see the sticky thread for dimensions) that fits the FWD Sienna spare wheel but will reduce the diamter difference to only about 0.2 inch.

2.) get the Mercedes GLK350 Vredenstein compact spare which also is closer to the AWD diameter (smaller by 0.25 inch exactly I believe) than the stock FWD spare tire. It costs a lot and you have to find one off a GLK (I bought one on ebay last week and waiting for it to arrive and the seller has been rather sketchy but does have 4 of these for sale so may be a good option) but the diameter is a lot smaller when collapsed (less than 20" diameter IIRC) so it fits better behind the 3rd row. If my Vredenstein ever gets to me I will post some comparison pics.

Then I guess the most exact and accurate way with regards to wheel/tire measurement is to buy a full size toyota sienna rim for spare with same size and everything.it's not gonna be compact anymore but theres nowhere to hide a compact spare tire on the back of the third row seat anyway.

Thanks for the input all. Like the idea about getting the sienna spare rim and fitting the proper sidewall height.
Thanks H4ldol.
I have winter rims so have been keeping one winter in back for spare use. I just find it is takiing up so much space and would like to reduce the size to the compact...even a little would be great.

If you use the 155/90/17 tire (I got from a Honda dealer; it's for a current or last gen Rav4, <$100) and the FWD spare wheel then you will have a donut spare with tire diameter only 0.20 inch less than stock tire diameter.

My Vredenstein is coming today so I will take some comparison pics and post here.

So any news on the Vredenstein?

never mind h4idol. I just read the other thread. Great info thank you.
Vredenstein is a cool idea. Smallest diameter option for sure. Fits perfectly in the trunk space with rear seat up. Although the if the Honda 155/90/17 fits well on the Sienna FWD 2011 rim then I may go that rout. I usually run the sienna with both rear seats down with a dog kennel and stroller etc back there. I have the full size spare behind the kennel right now sitting upright. So the height is not the issue for me but the width. So the 155 would be better for me over the 185 Vredenstein. Looks to be half the price to go with the honda crv tire as well...bonus!

Did you try the CRV/Sienna FWD combo? All work out?

Yep, I got the CRV tire mounted on the Sienna FWD spare wheel last year and it's a perfectly fine fit. Significantly bigger than the Vredestein but if size is not critical then the CRV tire is a good choice. I haven't inflated the Vredestein yet but maybe I'll try it sometime in the next week and post a comparison pic with the CRV/FWD spare wheel/tire.
