Hauling kids around with muddy cleats, sports equipment, etc, have done a number on my carpet (even with factory all-weather mats). Does anyone have any suggestions for cleaning the carpet front-to-back? I was thinking of purchasing a Bissell Auto Care unit, which is like their Little Green, but with some additional gadgets added.

Depends on how badly they are stained and how clean you really want them. I have had very limited success with the motorized carpet cleaning devices. While they tend to get more dirt than vacuuming, they don't do so well when it comes to sodapop or coffee spills and other food type stains. I also have found that using any water to clean the carpet will result in my van smelling really bad for a day or two until it dries out completely.

It may benefit you to take your van to a 'professional' detailer and have them clean just the carpets. Be sure they use a steam cleaning system to get the carpets clean. The steam units are available commercially to buy but most people would not use it often enough to justify the cost. Another option would be to contact a commercial carpet cleaning service like Stanley Steamer who could come to your home and clean your vehicle carpets. Yes, they do clean cars and vans too...:

I personally think this is the best way to go if you want your carpets really clean and they are really dirty.

The carpet in the van I eventually purchased, "pre-owned" smelled really bad on the dealer's lot. I'm convinced that the smell was the sole reason that it was $20,000. below MSRP and hadn't sold for a long time. It was tough to ignore the smell and see the overwhelming value of the van. I asked that the dealer to detail the interior again but when I picked it up, it still smelled.

I used my home carpet cleaning machine twice. I used the hand tool where the upright unit couldn't reach while the seats were removed. The second cleaning was done with a mixture of a carpet cleaning solution and a pet carpet deodorizer purchased at a pet store. Buy a deodorizer that uses enzymes to eliminate the odor versus a cover-up type. Once the carpet was dry, the smell was gone and I saved a lot of money.

I'd also recommend cleaning and deodorizing the cabin air filter too.

Goodluck!

Shall we say you need

1) Tuff-Stuff foam cleaner or resolve
2) steam cleaning

checkout http://autopia.org/

I have went to costco, picked up the most expensive bissel machine and brought it home to clean my car. Returned it shortly therafter...the professional steam cleaners are at 185F degrees and that's the best. bissel's heat doesn't get that hot, its luke warm.

your hearing this from a expert... look at my sign line.. the town i live in is the land of --------------... now yah know why I need to clean my carpets so often! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My van when i got it was BAD. Lots of stains. I removed the seats (all of them) and went to town on the carpets. I used a strong carpet cleaner with water(warm) and a scrub brush. Lots of elbow grease. Used a wet/vac to suck most of the moisture up. Sprayed a deoderizer on the carpet and let it dry for a day. I was able to let it dry with all the doors open all night in a shop. Next day installed the seats and i was good to go. I have some pics of my carpet before/after. Pics look bad even after(?) It looked alot better and i picked up a new set of carpet mats. I don't have any pics of the carpet mats installed. It looks 99% better.

(robo5 looking for pics) :)

Heh, heh.....I had a friend/co-worker that leased a prior gen Nissan Quest. He also had 2 very active young boys. I saw the inside of the car one time. TOTAL DISASTER ZONE. That carpet was totally trashed.....mud, dirt, various colors from markers, crayons, food crumbs, etc. He later traded it for another newer Quest. I didn't want to embarrass him and ask how much $$$$ they penalized him for the carpet/interior. Scary.  :'( :'( 8)

FWIW, before using steamers, solutions, or any other liquids, use a vacuum cleaner and a carpet brush. That will get all the dry stuff out, after which you can use solutions and liquids.
Believe me, the carpet brush works wonders. I used it 15 mins ago and it gets crumb out of the carpet. It's better than any Dyson that you can buy and probably costs under $5. It looks like a shoe polish brush.
(Don't use the same one on your cloth seats.)

Vacuum first, and then use the carpet brush to loosen all the stuck dirt, and then use a vacuum cleaner again.

Hello there!
With my recent experience, I would suggest you that you should hire a cleaning service. They will help you remove the evidence of everyday living, as well as the dirt, allergens, and odors buried deep in the carpet.
Hope you would like my suggestions.
Thanks

Hey toyfaninmd,

You can use Powdered cover cleaners, they are speedier to use as they can be vacuumed up – there's no long drying process included. Utilize a hard abounded brush with an answer of water and cover cleanser to scour stains. Heating pop can be utilized as a deodorizer. Keep in mind forget to test any cleaning items on a little zone first.

Thanks

That is exactly what I do with mine. Get as much of the dirt out of the carpet BEFORE you get anything wet.
This is best accomplished by vigorously brushing the carpet with a stiff brush and vacuuming thoroughly.
And if you have a smelly dog, another trick is to use mix of warm water + vinegar.
