Hi Everyone, just bought a used 07 sienna with 124K miles. I have no history of maintenance intervals. Fluid is not black-black , but darker , for sure not bright red!. It shifts fine, so the question is: Do I drain 4qt and fill , or leave it alone given the miles? Anyone experiencing issues after drain/fill at that many miles? thank you in advance

If you aren't sure, drain and fill it. Use the correct Toyota fluid (I believe, type WS for the '07) and a new crush washer. You will probably need something closer to 4.3 quarts, so buy a 5th quart. Then, do another drain and fill at the next oil change. If you're so inclined, dropping the pan and changing the filter is not totally a terrible idea, but a drain and fill will get you 1/3rd of the fluid fresh and new.

BTW, if you can change your own oil, you can drain and fill trans fluid in the Sienna. It just needs the correct sized hex key (or socket). The only catch is, you should have a container which will give you an indicator of approximately how much fluid comes out. (I find an empty 5-quart oil jug works well for this.) That's the amount you add to refill it. Oh, and you NEED a funnel for this one. You refill into the trans dipstick. If it's dark, I'd definitely do it ASAP and then, as I said, again at the next oil change, even if that oil change is planned for 1000 miles from now.

I think you may be confusing another piece of advice you hear a lot - don't do a transmission flush on a high mileage tranny if you think it might have a history of neglect. The conventional wisdom is that the flush can sometimes disturb sediment/gunk that has the potential to worsen your transmission's performance. I'm pretty sure Toyota says don't do a flush on any of their transmissions as a matter of routine maintenance.

I don't think there is any harm that can come from a drain-and-fill like Bill said - so long as you don't screw up the fluid levels and make sure it's all buttoned up properly after you finish.

I would recommend doing 2-3 drain and fills if I was in your shoes. This is what I did when I purchased my 09 with similar miles. Haven't had any problems. I used Valvoline Maxlife ATF.

Yes, that was the myth I was after, but based on everyone's replies here, I will at least do the drain/fill once. thank you all

So far I have done 4 drain and fill, the first one at 80k, 2nd one at around 90k and 2 more before the car reached 130k. When I did the last one, the fluid that came out looked brand new and no sign of burnt color.
My car took just about little less than 4 qts. Yes, like suggested, use WS fluid. it's around $13.00 at my local dealer I checked few weeks ago.

I have an '06, 192K on it. Did my first drain refill at about 90k. Now do them about every 30k as we tow a pop up. No issues at all. And yes, I also measure exactly what comes out and refill that amount. New crush washer. I actaully replace the drain bolt every couple of refills as it seems to get a little banged up.

At 170,000 miles, on my 99, I drain and filled then disconnected lines to the radiator and replaced the rest of it. 11 qts. Fortunately 99's use cheap Dexron. Like you the old fluid was dark red not black. Three years, still good.

2002 Sienna. every 20K miles drain 3 add 3, at 222,000 miles could not import car into Mexico any more so donated it to a local bible institute, shifted like new, fluid also looked like new. Freedom means making your own decisions on such things as this. But, some of you are way over thinking things. Fine if that suits you, of course, but not necessary.

Also, my son and I have more than 1/2 million miles using nylon washer, tighten by 'experience', instead of using crush washers

Doing the drain 3 add 3 thing reconstitutes the fluid but does not reduce the particulate that comes off the valve bodies etc. 120k is the recommended filter life, so 80k is a better preventative interval. If you're going to dump your fluid every 80k for a filter change then I suggest just doing the partial fluid swap at 40k and 60k.
