Gas cap or gasket?

3732 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  stayathomedad
My 05 sienna has been having the usual check engine light, vsc, and trac off lights on. From this forum clearing the codes and opening and closing the cap works when I clear the codes for a couple of days. So my question is would you replace the gasket or the whole cap and gasket? If you would replace the cap, does it need to be factory or could you use aftermarket? I really don't want to go to the stealership but would if I have too.
Thanks

I doubt you can just buy the gasket at the dealership, and in this case, I'd get a dealership cap, unless it's just stupidly expensive. You might check Rockauto.com, too.
When you gas up, dont top off the tank. Just stop when the pump clicks off. You can set the code by over filling the tank and liquid fuel gets sucked into the vapor vent system.
I never filled it up all of the way, I've only had it 3 weeks. The times that it came on was 4 or 5 days after putting gas in. Once the light comes on, I clear the codes and open and close the cap, all good till next fill, that's why I think it has to be the cap/gasket.
