Hi all,

Here is a brief clip including a ringing noise in my van as the RPMs pass through the 1500 band. I usually here this sound most clearly when I first start the van.

Can anybody offer any guesses to what is making the sound?

I have a 2006 LE with 195k miles with the 3.3L engine.

Only when rolling? Something in the axles or wheel bearings. Also when van isn’t moving? Something the belts turn. Hopefully not something the timing belt turns

Sounds like a harmonic vibration of some sort. Doubt it's even in the engine at all. Possibly a wheel bearing, or something as simple as a piece of metal on the undercarriage moving around more than it should.

A few more details on the sound: it seems to have something to do with RPMs and not just wheel bearings etc because it only manifests itself under load and not when the engine is in neutral or even coasting. In the clip I uploaded you can hear it clearly right at the 5 second mark as the engine reaches 1500 rpm and then a couple more times as it shifts to second and third gears. I think it has to be somewhere in the power train, and not anything along the axle/wheel bearing lines that @sixto suggested.

If only happens at ~1500 RPM, I would suspect resonant vibration from somewhere (e.g. heat shield). But it should happen even at neutral while parking.

I am not a mechanic, but when a "resonance" sound comes at certain RPMs it has to do or it is related to valve clearance. Sometimes, you can heard that resonance again at higher RPMs, but on an automatic vehicle is not often to rich those levels unless you are in a race mood My Tacoma does it at 2000 and 3000RPMs and to overhaul valves is a project that needs some skills, time and money, three things I don't have around
