Hello all.

Just wondering if anyone has had these issues and how they got them resolved. Recently on our 98' Toyota Sienna van, when we make a left turn the following occurs: map lights come on at the same time the door ajar comes on in driving panel screen and if you had the doors locked, they will become unlocked.

This only occurs when you turn LEFT, I can never get this to occur when turning RIGHT.

This happens I would say 80-90% of the time when turning LEFT..

Any suggestions out there as Toyota Service said I would need to spring $450.00 just to have this analyzed before even fixing the issue.. I really did not want to shell this out let alone let someone go rooting into the electrical system..

Thanks much.

Just a thought... Could it be a flaky door switch or relay operated by the door switches? If you open one of your doors, do the same events occur?

Hey Royc, Not sure I follow.. So are you saying when inside the van and when doors are unlocked to try to open: 1) driver door, 2) passenger door ??

Thanks,
Steve

Check that silver catch latch thingy on your door pillars (I'm not sure of the real name). On my Honda accord I had door lights come on after a while since the screws were getting loose. Cheap and easy to do first.

Hey JC.

I did just go out and check the posts on the two doors (driver and passenger ) and both were solid. I will check sliding doors also tomorrow I guess..

Thanks,
Steve

It sure sounds like body flex is activating a door switch. On a left turn, the drivers side would likely be in compression (doors pushing inwards), the passengers side pushing outwards. The tailgate frame takes on a trapezoidal shape surrounding the square liftgate door. So I'd bet on it being either the passengers side or tailgate is moving enough that the logic thinks the door opens.

Yeah. While driving slowly in a safe place, what happens if you grab the driver's door handle and open the door? Do the map lights, door ajar light, etc. come on like when you were making a left turn?

Steve,

take the door panel off and check everything underneath the door, all bolts, wiring harnesses etc. On my 98 when I did that I found two of the bolts that hold the window assembly were very loose and one of them fell out. Maybe there is a frayed wiring harness or loose connection. Maybe you can close the door to the van once the panel is off, turn on the van and start wiggling the wires and check if there is a short anywhere. You'll find it, it's just gonna take time and patience.

We had this problem, too. 1998 Sienna.
I thought my wife was kidding, but I saw it with my own eyes!
I even put the car in the driveway, started the engine with the door OPEN (and my finger on the door switch), and fiddled with the switch until I replicated both the "unlock" and interior lights problem.
Solution: I added a ~1/8" thick x 1" x 3" piece of adhesive-backed rubber over the part of the door that triggers the switch. No. More. Problem. Our problem was with RIGHT hand turns, so I found some VERY aggressive right hand turns to test it out...all is good!

BTW: Right hand turns means you have to fix the DRIVER's door. Left Hand Turns (I would imagine) you might want to focus on the front passenger (right) door. I looked at the little flat-topped "hump" on both doors, and the left-hand (Driver) door was definitely "dimpled." The right hand door was not.

Hi Steve,
I just started having the same problems. Before the door light would stay on all the time. So I cleaned and used WD 40 on all the door hinges and locks. Now whenever I turn left my door light and all the locks go on. After this the light on both the dash and door go out until I turn again.
Like you I cannot afford to bring this to a mechanic at this time.
