I’m baffled, hoping for some input.

when the car is on/idling with passengers inside, is it possible to lock the car, besides pressing lock from the inside?

my previous cars, if idling, can be locked with the remote or touching the lock button on the outside of the car.

I’ve tried those above steps on the Sienna but it just doesn’t work. This is annoyance when I need to run to a store while my wife stays in the van with the kids in the back. It’s particularly hard to climb to the front just to lock it.

The main way is the mechanical key that is in the fob. I think someone also had a procedure where they rolled the window down, got out, and shut the door. Then they hit the lock button through the window and hit the window up button.

Open the window.
Close the door.
Reach in press lock and the window up.
Pull your hand out.
Done

The issue now is, how to open/unlock.

I’m not sure never tried but I do know a ton of cars what you do is hold the outside handle up then push the inside lock button (manually) and close the door.
Probably work work on a Sienna.

We’ve done this many times when leaving the dog in the car with the A/C running while we stop at a restaurant. Just use your mechanical key to lock it. (You’ll then have to use it to unlock it also.)
