Knocking noise on right rear area !!!

37228 Views 62 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  lly
2016 XLE Premium with 3500 miles developed knocking noise on right/passenger rear area mostly on uneven roads wher ther could be some car body flexing, also accelerating on a stop sign or traffic lights, lately coming down from a spped bump, but cannot hear anything on bumpy roads so I am very confused.the noise is just one and done like "tap" and that's it everytime. This car is not abused nor driven much which shows in the low mileage.
It sounded like suspension noise but I am not sure, everything seems tight underneath.Could it be our built in sway bar link moving?I checked the top nut of right rear shock and it is tight.I don't know if they are body parts(doorspanels) that are rubbing against each other everytime there's some sudden flexing or movement.
I need help from fellow members. Please let me know if anyone had experienced this.
Thank you all.

Did you try it yet? I know it is VERY annoying but I am 100% sure there are no perfect cars. My suggestion, don't pull the trigger to sell the car because of this reason because most likely either you will get a real serious/ bigger problem or something similar again on your next car/s. At the end, it is your money your car. Good luck my friend.

I took it into Toyota yesterday for the Fuel Pump recall as well. No one knows what the knocking is. Today, the knocking doubled in noise and repetition. I can’t take it anymore. So done with it.

Again, did you try the tape on the 3rd row seats?

The tape and the >90 degree 3rd row seat cured mine. He should try that first but it is his car.

At least try to lean the seat back (>90 degree). It takes about 8 Seconds to do the 3rd row seats.

Negative. Where on the Third Row do you put the tape?
Today, I had my wife drive While I was in the back seat. The noise is still coming from above the Rear left wheel well Pretty heavily now (sometimes on the rear passenger, every now and then). The knocking is definitely not coming from the seats. (But I’m willing to “tape” the third-row. Can you explain what you are actually taping?)
Crazy thing is, is that I can actually feel the knocking on the Rear part of the door frame when I put my hand on it during the drive...but I can’t get to it.
Remember how I mentioned where I thought it could have been bad shocks? Well, now I’m doubting that’s the culprit. Could it be the springs? Do Should I replace them? I also thought it could be the bushings, but my mechanic (not the Toyota guys. They weren’t very helpful and the knocking problem didn’t really concern them too much) said it wasn’t the bushings because they looked good and there was no movement or give To them. I’m at a loss for words.

If you stow or flatten the 3rd row seats, you should see where the 3rd row latches. Wrap that latch with tape. Make sure it is not too thick. Read post #219.

Getting the same exact problem. Bought the Van used (2013 SE) about 1 month ago and it didn't make any noises driving around the dealership. The front passenger side seat belt mount inside is making knocking noises also. I stowed the rear seats down and can still hear the knocking noise. Did you feel the knock on the rear part of the sliding door frame (driver side) or the "trunk" door frame?
Sorry to hear. Yes, I can still feel the knock on the rear area of the door frame on the driver side. I also folded the rear seats down and had my wife drive around the block while the rear door was open and me sitting in the rear like it was a truck bed. I’m narrowing down to the brakes (either the clips on the pads are somehow slipping back and forth during the breaking process, or the pads are sticking to the rotors then breaking free, or the calipers just need to be replaced with all new pads on both sides. Maybe that’s the issue? I’m still stumped.

I did hear the same noise once when I stepped on the brakes after driving it in the morning, however, it's more prominent when I'm on a turn or a bumpy road. My next step is to open up the panels and see what's moving around inside. I'll keep you posted if I find anything.

Please do. I hear it on bumpy roads as well, but the shocks and struts are good. I’ll keep everyone up to date from what I find out as well.

I removed the cover and inspected the top mount. It looks worn out and my Van has about 80k miles on it. I drove around for a bit with the cover off and it sounded a bit louder. I'm somewhat convinced that the ruber mount is worn out and causing the popping noise. I had to replace my front strut mount/bearing cause it was causing popping noises too when on a slow turn and hitting the brakes. I can't verify it cause I don't have anyone to drive while I ride in the back and look at it. Going to see if I can buy just the mount and replace it.

Have you replaced your rear shocks already?
Have you replaced your rear shocks already?
Was going to, but then my mechanic changed his mind. I’m definitely going to change out the Calipers, pads, etc. I may override the decision and replace the shocks and struts all at the same time. If that doesn’t work, I’m trading it in for something else.

Interesting. I had the cover off mine as my wife drove, but no issues there for me.

I was thinking it was the brakes too but it was serviced at Toyota about 5k miles ago ...replaced the pads but they just resurfaced the rotors. I looked at it myself and did not find anything loose and the caliper retainer looks intacked. Found the mounts for $35 each. Might wait until I can find someone to drive the Van around for me while I sit in the back and verify its the mount.

I figured out what that horrible knocking noise coming from the rear is coming from. I read another forum where people put electrical tape on the anchors where the sliding door latches on to. I wrapped the anchor with a layer of gorrilla tape on the front and back side. I also sprayed white lithium grease on all three rollers and tracks. Drove the van around and no more damn clicking/knocking noise! Door opens and closes well but I think that tape will need to be changed often once it starts making noises again. I added grease on the latch also. I also put a coat of grease on all contact point s of the sliding door to reduce the screetching noise from rubber or plastic rub. Going to do some research if they have aftermarket anchors that have padding. Let me know if this fix works for you also.
