I decided to start a new thread instead of continuing to hijack another thread in general discussion. For those with LE and want prox key function, you seem to have two options:
(1) Aftermarket smart key - these steal your smart key's chip to put in a new key, and an OBD2 adapter is used to communicate with it to enable the proximity function. Here's an example of one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004149080798.html. I noted a few concerns:
  • you need to mod your original key, stealing the chip and solder wires to it
  • you won't have the physical backup hidden key with you
  • it doesn't have sliding door controls
  • prox unlock/lock is by distance only, so you will get random lock/unlock if you just walk around close to your car
(2) Replacement smart door handles - I was pretty happy to find these. More expensive, but still reasonable to add the prox key function. It works exactly like OEM, so you touch the door handle to lock/unlock. Here's the link: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004961386777.html
  • you need to open up the door panels to replace the handles and install the module
  • seems to come with white handle shells, so color match could be an issue

I expect your next mod to be self opening power front doors like the sliding doors.

Now that would be a mod worthy of 4th gen Sienna :)

We gotta get group buys going on for Sienna!!
I'm just trying to get what I consider to be basic features (for a $40k+ car) into the LE. I've always wondered what LE stands for. I think it's "Low Edition". At least they don't make CE's anymore (Cheap Edition).

I requested the installation guide for the replacement smart door handles. The installation is a bit involved but it's basically plug and play. Admittedly, my ability to read simplified Chinese is rather limited, but from what I gather, you keep the control box somewhere hidden behind the console, there's a harness to tap into one of the ECU's behind the glove box, and another tap into the harness near the front fuse box. You then pull two small cables, one into each door, to connect up the new door handles. The rear door handles don't have new sensors, they're just shells (optional) to match the new front ones with the chrome (XLE/Limited type).

I have an installation appointment tomorrow for a remote start/ proximity unlock system by Compustar. It operates similar to the first system you described but, to my knowledge, will not require a sacrificial original key.

Here's what is being installed:
CM-DC3 Universal Remote Start Control Module w/ Built-in Bypass (the CMX is recommended but I have a DC3 on hand and Compustar confirmed firmware that allows proximity unlock is available for the DC3)
RFX-P2WR5-SF
- ANT-2WSF 2-Way SS Antenna with Proximity Unlock
- Two PRO R5 2-Way LED Remotes
- FT-TEMP Thermistor Temperature Sensor

I'm pretty sure the harness number is FT-HRN-DC3. Sadly, they don't offer a plug and play option for the Sienna yet.

FYI, their EZ-GO II and Pro T13 systems also offer proximity unlock.

Will keep you posted after the install tomorrow. Fingers crossed it works well.

Gotta disagree.

The LE in Canada has heated front seats, heated steering wheel, power dual sliding doors, nice alloy 17" wheels and tires, same engine as other trims.

It does not have power hatch... no biggie for us.

It does not have fake or real leather seats... we prefer cloth.

It does not have moon roof... big plus in our eyes.

It does not have kick sensors... very big plus as attested by other threads.

Of course YMMV however the LE is at sweet spot for us and has what we need in a practical family mover.

It is the lowest trim but based on history it is actually 2nd trim with few upgrades compared to prior gens.

Despite my tongue-in-cheek comment, I actually do think the LE is the obvious best value choice in the line-up. I really like that Toyota made TSS standard across the line compared to some competitors. I'm also really glad Toyota Canada gave all trims heated steering wheel, I told myself I will not live without one again, and it's expensive/difficult to add aftermarket (I don't mess with airbags). In fact, the LE is such a good value, I think Toyota went out of their way to purposely cheapen it in some areas so they can push the higher trims (the cheap plastic on the grill and lack of puddle lights on the doors for example).
For me, I do want a power rear hatch, leatherette seats, and prox keys. Fortunately, all can be fixed with aftermarket upgrades. Upgrading the car is half the fun for me. Anyway, 2nd row bench seats and spare tire are bigger pluses in my book, which convinced me to switch to the LE.

#2 is a great find. Thank you. I'm very interested in this mod.

1. So, this options only replaces the handles to chrome only on the driver side? The passenger side will continue to be non-chrome ?
2. Would you be able to ask for an english version of instructions?

It replaces both driver and front passenger doors with sensor handles. The rear handles use the existing power sliding door buttons.
I doubt they have English instructions, if they did they would have sent to me already cause I was asking them in English…

I studied the instructions a bit more. The wire tap near the front fuse box is to get the power windows, so you can do auto window open when you press and hold on the handle. If you don’t care for that feature you can leave it unconnected. Then it’s just the one connector to the ECU behind the glove box, and of course wires to the handles in the front doors.

The worst is the "CE" package (cheapskate edition) on the previous generation Sienna's.
Black unpainted trim pieces and mirrors.
None of the windows are tinted, so it looks like the passengers are riding around in an aquarium.

For the love of god, just spend a few thousand more and get the LE package,,,

Thanks for your reply. Are you planning to do this mod? If so, please capture video of the steps.

An update on this. Can confirm that proximity unlock does work with this setup. Installed today and working well. It was cold out so I didn't get to mess with it much but here are a few things I learned.

  • Proximity unlock works exactly as I expected, except that it does not work when the car has been remote started. I'm assuming this is a security feature.
  • The Pro-R5 remotes are nice and small and, because they're two-way, alert you as to whether the function you're trying to do was successful.
  • Proximity/ auto delayed locking does not appear to be currently set up. Going to mess with that and see what I can find.

What’s all that gonna cost you?
I'm expecting to be about $300 out of pocket. I purchased the CM-DC3 as part of a full one-way kit from Best Buy that also included the harness and free installation. The upgraded remotes and antenna were purchased separately. When I went in for the installation this morning I brought both kits with me and explained I just wanted to use the upgraded remotes and antenna. Because the installation is the same, they didn't charge me for it. All the rest of the parts are going on eBay.
