It’s certainly interesting as a 3rd gen owner to read all the cost cutting Toyota did in the 4th gens. My 2014 LE hatch lights lights lit. They are halogen bulbs, but with nice reflectors that spread the light evenly and pleasantly throughout the hatch light covers, and match well with the tail/stop lights on the van outside the hatch. They function as taillights only, not stop, like the stock 4th gen models that do come lit.

Tail and stop lights on the van itself are LED. Reverse and turn signals are halogen.

Looks really nice.
Did you buy it from Toyota dealer and change it there? Or you did it all by yourself?
I also swapped my rear lights on my 2022 XLE. I didn’t feel safe driving day or night with the original extremely small rear lights. I did it for both the safety and esthetics… It was more work than I thought but tying into the trailer hitch lighting connector simplified the wiring connections. I routed all the wiring through the top frame and through the existing rubber boot hose at the top of the hatch. That took longer than installing the lights themselves but now everything is tucked away and hidden away and works flawlessly

Thanks for posting about this. I have an LE AWD and just checked. My tail lights only have a single bulb and not the three light strips shown on Toyota’s website. I guess I should have checked this prior to purchasing but I’m disappointed this is the case. I cannot find any website that talks about the differences in the tail lights depending on the trim level, including Toyota’s website. I’m eager to hear from those with the higher trim levels what their tail lights look like.
The "3 lines" are avail here --> https://www.toyota.com/content/dam/toyota/brochures/pdf/2023/sienna_ebrochure.pdf as "Premium LED taillights and stop lights" and is only avail in XSE, Platinum and Limited. It's really weird to read some XLE owners don't have the premium leds taillights.

As per Toyota's website, LED tail lights are standard on all the 2021 Sienna trims. I just bought an XLE and it has the traditional bulb tail light. I noticed it after I brought it home. The salesman is clueless. Do you all have the 3 bar LED tail lights or is it only supposed to be on the higher trims?
the sales man in MX City doesn't even know the Limited has the premium tail lights... they don't have a clue either, at all

On eBay: redmondsworldwidellc. They don't seem to have any sets right now. You should be able to buy from anyone on eBay as long as you get the 3 LED bar version. The LE, XLE don't come with the 3 bar LED taillights. The Limited and Platinum have them. I think the XSE has them too. The eBay ones will all come from totaled vehicles so check carefully for cracks or missing tabs. Mine were in perfect brand new condition. The hardest part will be making sure they have the 3 bar LED light system... Some of the listings on eBay say 'w/o LED' which is pretty clear

Thanks! Great info. I have never done any electrical work on a vehicle before. So just to clarify, i’d be looking for LED inner and outer tailight for either XSE, Platiunum, or Limited? Does the new setup require additional wiring?

The XLE taillights are indeed LED, they are just cheap looking LEDs. Which is too bad.
its just an LED bulb in a regular housing. you could swap it for incandescent if you could pop it out of the housing, but it sealed, and when the LED burns out, you replace the entire assembly. I plan on using some of my tax return to buy the nicer LED taillights from toyota directly, as they are reasonably priced.

I did it on my XLE: it’s not plug and play, the light assemblies fit exactly physically the same as the existing ones but you have to do some additional wiring to power the LED bars on the light assemblies on the hatch. I tied into the trailer hitch plug that’s located under the s-are tire area. Popping off the interior trim near the hatch is easy. Fishing the wires through to the hatch takes time. You do have to remove the trim on the hatch itself. If you’ve installed a car stereo with new wiring you should be able to do it, otherwise get help from someone with that type of experience…

Any reason you guys are pulling pose from the hitch wiring vs license plate light? Maybe because the hitch wiring is made to carry a higher electrical load vs license plate bulb?
yes, the taillight bulb has this tiny ass 18 or 20 ga wire. the trailer hitch is 14. while the LEDs might not need much current, I dunno what else is already on that same circuit, and im not gonna pay $30 for a wiring diagram access from toyota.

Agreed! Also it just made sense to me to take power from a harness purposed for those exact light sets.

Good reasons! Thanks for the confirmation.
