The Drive: The Mercedes Metris Van Is Leaving the US Because Nobody Wanted It

The Metris, an Americanized version of the V-Class van, was introduced back in 2015 and leaving shortly due to poor sales. Roughly the size of a Sienna, it was expensive for a cargo van compared vs. the smaller Transit Connect and larger Transit. Interior materials were on a budget, and the luxe versions available in Europe were never available stateside. These were sold by Mercedes Commercial dealers, which were not always the one that sold passenger cars. The larger Sprinter remains, but will lose its gasoline engine.

Speaking to Automotive News, an anonymous Mercedes dealership exec went as far as saying the van did not deserve the Mercedes badge. "There's nothing luxury about it," he said. "It drives louder than a Toyota." Sort of an unnecessary dig at Toyotas, which are actually pretty quiet inside these days, but you get the idea.

So basically junk 馃槀. Like most European luxury cars, it cost a bunch then gets electrical gremlins later and value drops like a rock.

I remember riding one of those Metrises (an airport shuttle, before COVID) and the word that comes to my mind is "primitive", comparing to any other similar van.
It's amazing what piece of crude junk you can sell once you slap a prestigious badge on it.

USPS bought 30K Metrises in RHD as a stopgap as the Grumman LLVs are at the end of their service lives. They replaced the 3-pointed star on the grille as not to tick off people by using a Mercedes. They apparently comprised of the majority of recent sales.
