Rear Axle Beam Assembly

316 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  circus
Hi All,

I’m going to be doing a lift on the Sienna in a few weeks and know that the rear axle beam assembly and related parts are fairly rusty. I’m looking around for a replacement beam with no rust. I have an 08 AWD and found an ‘04 FWD at the local Pick a Part. Would that work? Or are the beams different between FWD and AWD?

thanks in advance,
Mike

Based on this page, I think that should work fine:

I think that is the part you are looking for, since this other website lists it as axle beam assembly:

Of course you could just inspect, sandblast and paint, what you already have, while still in the car. I did it on my 99, preventive maintenance. Miserable but didn't take long, no guess work and was inexpensive.
Motivated by stories of totaled vans from it's failure. Thanks Sienna chat.
Yeah, all good options. Went to the junkyard and got one off of an 04 they cross just fine. The big trick is that the 04 head drum brakes and my 08 has disc brakes. Trying to figure out if it is worth trying to swap it all over. Good learning experience, taking cars apart in the junkyard is very informative. My main concern with my current beam is that the shock mounts are very corroded. This new beam is fairly clean.

Transferring everything over between the two is just a brake job plus 4 extra bolts and a wire, really. If you need rear brakes, it's the ideal time too. Is it the junkyard shock mounts or the spring perches that are a problem on the junkyard beam? If it's just the mount points, you could easily clean that up. If it's the coil spring perches and they're rusty, just clean and paint. If they are actually "very corroded" (i.e. through-holes, cracks, etc.), I'd either find a better axle beam or have new perches/gussets welded on.
with my current beam is that the shock mounts are very corroded.
Failure is when the arms rust through and twists. Then the tire camber leans negative til the tire hits the well, jams or may fall off. Fixing a shock mount is trivial.
