If you wanted maximum PARK mode time coverage from your 2-3 channel dash cam, would you wire it:

  • Dash Cam to overhead OEM outlet with battery back up pack wired to front fuse box (or plug in accy)

  • Rear fusebox is not a good idea for any of this

Rear Fuse box for Dash Cam + Battery pack power?

 I know - ANOTHER dash cam thread...

I intend to install a radar detector as well as a 2 or 3 channel dash cam with super capacitor (heat resistance) and battery back up for extended park times.

I believe I'll use that plug hiding under the front overhead console box (where the OEM dash cam plugs in) to power the radar detector since 12V switched is all that is required.

I get the vibe that the front under dash fusebox is a little tight to tap into with the wiring kits (using for low voltage cutoff function). Since I'll be working interior panels to snake the rear cam line through anyway, I have a notion to make the power source for the cameras (as well as the battery back up pack) live back there near the rear fuse panel (it seems to have a bit more room that the front interior fuse box). Tapping an always hot, switched, and ground.

Although the vehicle is garaged most of the time, it does spend some significant time (days) parked unattended and I would like monitoring capability as much as possible in Park mode.

I don't know if this is a factor, but it's a wheelchair conversion. I've been considering an UBER style side-hustle to help pay for this (outrageously expensive but oh-so-worth-it) magic carpet, hence the 3 channel consideration. VIOFO is likely brand BTW.

Thanks for any insight/experience!

I got a pimorino 3 camera system that uses about 11w. I also got a bluetti lipo eb3a battery bank. Which is about 280wh. It fits under the center console and i use that . I also have the built in inverter so that charges the battery in less than an hour. Just gotta flip the inverter switch each time to start thequick charging. Or you can get a 12v car charger that charges in 2.5 hours. The lipo battery are more a stable than lithium, can do much more charge cycles and dont catch on fire as easily as lithium. When the camera runs on battery, it last about 24 hours.

I use a Cellink Neo with Viofo A129 Duo in my current car. You don't need constant power, just switched power to the battery. There's a prewired Viofo harness you can get that plugs directly into the Cellink Neo. Very easy install.

Say, I like the way you think, Goolong. (y) A Bluetti will free up the overhead compartment dongle for a radar detector, provide plenty of park mode power for a dash cam, AND I can plug in our trip cooler (part time task).... or any other gadget that needs juice. I do not have a center console (removed for wheelchair conversion), but with all the L-Tracks in the floor, there are plenty of options to secure it. If anything, I can fashion a breathable/secure spot in the luggage area for a more permanent spot - and tap into the rear fuse box.

And it's way cheaper than the celink neo and large capacity.

Is it constantly recording or just by motion recording?

Constantly recording as long as i dont leave the vehicle sitting for 2 days without driving. So this handles overnight parking. The 24 hours of recording time starts when i turn off the engine.

I guess this would handle 95% of my needs. I cant expect a week of recording /parking without something like solar. I could try to change it to motion recording and see how long it last.
