Resetting Jacked Up Moonroof

29770 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Sequoia
Loving this vehicle more everyday....(sarcasm for those that can't process). Wife had this gem to deal with yesterday:

Automotive exterior Automotive design Hood Windshield Vehicle door

Dealer told my wife he couldn't get it in until Wed of next week. I called Fat Bastard back (that's our knickname for the service writer at our nearest dealer because that's exactly what he is) and he agreed to squeeze us in Monday morning. Whoopie. Given we need to drive it this weekend I took it upon myself to attempt "adjusting" this thing back onto track and I got it to close most of the way. I'm not sure it's sealed properly because just as it goes to lock all the way down it pops back up. If I tap the button just right I can get it to stay most of the way down but not that last little bit where it locks. I was reading on one of these forums and there was mention of a "reset" or "recycle" of the moonroof if it gets jammed. Does anyone know the process to do that? I'd like to give it a try before renting a van for tomorrows trip.

The 2011 Repair Manual has a few procedures which may help.
1. CHECK AUTO OPERATION (FRONT SLIDING ROOF SYSTEM)
NOTICE: Make sure that initialization is completed before inspection.

HINT: When pressing the switch for 0.3 seconds or less, the roof glass moves but auto operation does not operate.

(a) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(b) When the roof glass is fully closed, press the OPEN switch for 0.3 seconds or more. Check that the roof glass automatically tilt up until it is fully tilted upward.

(c) When the roof glass is fully tilted up, press the OPEN switch for 0.3 seconds or more. Check that the roof glass automatically slides until it is fully opened.

(d) When the roof glass is fully open, press the CLOSE switch for 0.3 seconds or more. Check that the roof glass automatically slides until it is fully closed.

(e) When the roof glass is fully tilted up, press the CLOSE switch for 0.3 seconds or more. Check that the roof glass automatically tilts down until it is fully tilted downward.

(f) When the auto operation is operating, check that pressing any sliding roof switch stops the roof glass operation.
To initialize
1. INITIALIZE SLIDING ROOF DRIVE GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY (FRONT SLIDING ROOF ECU) AND SLIDING ROOF DRIVE GEAR ASSEMBLY (REAR SLIDING ROOF ECU)

NOTICE: When replacing the sliding roof drive gear, the new sliding roof drive gear requires initialization. If a reset is not executed, the following functions do not operate: AUTO operation and jam protection function.

(a) Press the CLOSE switch and keep it pressed until the sliding roof motor stops, then release it.

(b) Press and hold the CLOSE switch again. After 10 seconds, the system enters Initialization mode.

(c) Keep the CLOSE switch pressed, and confirm that the sliding roof moves in the following sequence:
--- Full close (soft stop position) -> Full close (mechanical stop position) -> Full close (soft stop position)

(d) Release the CLOSE switch. Press and hold the CLOSE switch again within 5 seconds.

(e) Keep the CLOSE switch pressed, and confirm that the sliding roof moves in the following sequence:
--- Full close -> Full open -> Full close

(f) Release the CLOSE switch.

(g) The Initialization sequence is now complete.
There is also this.

Thanks, tried the initialize but it didn't change anything. Never had problems with a factory sunroof before so hopefully they've got it figured out with that TSB.
Of course our sunroof autoclose before an hour of rain that came down so hard the wiper couldn't keep up. One can try to guess where the window is sealed but it most likely won't be watertight. We had water pouring from the ceiling throughout the Sienna. Fortunately, no water stains but one needs to dry the ceiling out by leaving the window open after the storm (mold). This reset worked and our sunroof autocloses with no more leaks. Thanks!!!
