I was browsing on the net for free Carfax reports as I am on a tight budget right now to make additional purchases beside what I allotted for my car. Suddenly, I found this free VIN check site. Not sure if legit. Should I trust it as a reference, or should I still opt for a paid service with an established reputation like Carfax or AutoCheck?

Take any of these services as a first data point, and nothing more. I've found many inconsistencies and missing data on Carfax, and I'm sure they are all just as lacking.

If the vehicle was serviced at the dealership, take the VIN number to the Service Manager and ask for a data dump. That will at least get you everything that was done under warranty, and owner-paid maintenance.

Work done at private shops can be very hard to obtain from any of these sources.
