Spare Tire

Imagine you are driving in the wilderness of Wyoming or Montana where the next exit is 200 miles and there is no cell phone signal and you have a flat? What would you do? There is no spare tire in your 2022 Sienna, on which you spent an arm and leg ( what an idiotic way for Toyota to save money).

To be fair, if I was driving somewhere that was 200 miles between service and no cell phone signal, I don't think I'd do it with the factory doughnut spare on my 2014 either. Doughnut spares are only supposed to be used at 50 MPH max speed, for 50 miles max. 200 miles between service with no cell phone signal, to me, is approaching or crossed into the carry a full sized spare, plus a patch kit, plus an air compressor. I already carry an air compressor, and keep meaning to buy a good patch kit, and I'm usually never out of cell phone service nor more than 50 miles from a service center.

Also, this isn't new on the hybrid Siennas. On the 3rd gen Sienna (2011-2020), FWD models had a doughnut spare. But AWD models had no spare, and instead came with run-flat tires from the factory, which everybody says were terrible tires to drive on. There are a ton of threads on here with 3rd gen AWD owners looking to add a spare tire or showing how they added one, since they didn't want to replace run-flat tires with new run-flat tires.

What if you were driving across Canada and Alaska?

With the AWD version I just keep a repair kit and DeWalt pump in the car, and more importantly yet, drive according to road conditions, which means slowing down when the road is bad. Works pretty well and I've never had a flat doing this drive mostly due to only driving at higher speeds when the road is in excellent condition.

What is the best option people have found for putting a full sized spare in the back of a Sienna? We got an AWD Sienna and also want to replace the run flat tires with regular tires and a full size spare in the back. Like the original poster, our idea of a vacation is to remoter areas. I think of driving over the Big Horn Mountains to the town of Ten Sleep. Would I want to rumble into that town with run flat tires and no spare? I saw someone pull over for a flat just yesterday but they weren’t in Ten Sleep, Wyoming!

On my XLE AWD, I bought a fifth wheel from a salvage yard that matches my other four and bought five regular tires. My spare sits behind the second row seats, flat on the floor, third row seats stowed down. I have the long slide, ottoman second row seats.
Someone made a spare mount from steel flat bar that is attached to the third row seatbelt mounting bolt points on the passenger side. Spare tire is bolted to the steel bar in a vertical position. Third row seat on driver's side still operates normally. Storage space behind third row seat in floor.
I would rather have the spare inside the van. Options are attaching your spare to a trailer hitch mount, or on the roof. I chose not to do that, due to weight and potential theft.

Thanks! We have our vehicles serviced at one place, and the service manager tracked down a reconditioned wheel and put a tire on it. It is available for pick up and I am excited to figure out how to store it! I also decided against a trailer hitch mount or roof mount. We have a canopy for camping that I want to easily put in back, so I am going to try to have the tire standing up behind the middle passenger side seat and have the third row passenger side seat not used. This has been quite an education for me. I never heard of run flat tires, didn't know what AWD drive was, and didn't even know the difference between wheel and tire! What I did know is there is no way I am driving around remoter areas of Minnesota without a spare!
