The 80% Complete DIY for LED Interior Lights

The following is a simple DIY to upgrade 80% of the interior lights to LED. Like most of you, I was disappointed in the light output of the current Sienna's interior lights. This is my first DIY post for the Sienna but I made a few before back in the day on 9thgencorolla.com when I had a '05 Corolla.

You may wonder why only 80%, the reason is I can't yet figure out the driver/passenger map lights in my 2021 Toyota Sienna XSE. I made an attempt but removing the plastic trim was getting more complicated beyond my comfort level. As of this posting (Jan 2021) there aren't any exploded diagrams or even parts available online like you would normally find on the Toyota Parts website. So rather than crack something, I'd rather wait until a diagram comes out to further study how to replace those lights. Now for the rest of the DIY:

Suggested Tools
  • Small slotted screwdriver
  • Masking tape or electrical tape
  • Trim removal tools
Links for the Light Bulbs I Used
Nowadays there are lots of places to get cheap LEDs. There are three bulb styles for the interior. I suggest LASFIT for two of them. I've used them before on my other vehicles and they've always been reliable. I don't see that they carry the light for the visor so I went with something I found on Amazon. So far they work ok.
Window Visor Lights
The lens on the window visors is held in place by four tabs circled in red. Best to approach this by pulling on the edge that is adjacent to the mirror as there are no tabs there.

Once you remove the lens cover the old halogen bulb looks like a fuse. Simply pull it from the prongs and install the new LED festoon bulbs. If you have trouble with the new bulbs working, make sure both sides of the visor have their new lights installed and try flipping the bulbs like you would a battery.

2nd Row Lights
The second-row lights use a hinged cover. You'll want to start prying on the lens closest to the driver/passenger with the aim of pulling it towards you. I forgot to take a picture of the lens removed but it uses a wedge-based 194 halogen bulb. Simply pull out the old one and replace it with a new one. Repeat on the other side.

3rd Row Light
I feel like this particular light has been in Toyota vehicles for at least 20 years. This is a hinged design, you'll want to insert your small screwdriver in the lens cover and pull the cover towards you. You'll expose the 31mm festoon halogen bulb. There is a small tab like a battery that you can depress and the bulb will fall right out. Replace with the new LED bulb. Toyota uses festoon bulbs that have these special tabs to help align it in the holder but with a little patience, you should get the new one put in.

The covers on these lights are hinged, pull from the bottom and towards you. Once the housing falls out, you can disconnect the wiring harness from the housing. You may need a small screwdriver to help depress the tab.

The housing is a few parts. You'll want to remove the hinged cover. Start by inserting a slotted screwdriver into the small opening and pull the cover up. Once you do that, you can remove the cover and change the bulb. Close it back up and reinstall.

I agree: This thread is totally awesome, most helpful and added a huge value in my owning/driving experience.

The difference, after changing all the internal lights except the map ones, is poles apart. The driving/owning experience with the brighter (happier) LED lights is truly augmenting and enhancing the joy. Which only leaves me to imagine how significant of a jump in a happier experience it would be to change the map lights too. Such a shame, they are soldered onto the circuit board and as such not too easy to replace.

Also, once again a huge thank you to everyone who chimed in with their experience, and shared amazon links for the bulbs alongwith helpful information. To the OP, I owe you a coffee for sure (*thumbs up)

Yup, and they just happens to be the hardest ones to change. I still have my LED bulbs here somewhere as I could not change them. The owner's manual is not exactly of great help either. I think there is one video on youtube about it but the guy puts the camera down on the ground when he is changing it so we cannot see exactly how to change.

I have to agree on the map lights. I posted somewhere earlier about changing out the lights on the two visors. In practice, using the visor lights when I would otherwise use a map light has proven to be a fantastic work around for the soldered map lights. They give off plenty of bright light, and for those times when someone doesn't want something so bright, the map lights work for them.

Successfully changed all the lights, including rear flashers, backup and license plate lights. Too bad we can't change the map lights. I saw a video on YouTube for highlander with same issue and that individual appears to have figured a way and will be uploading a video soon, hopefully it's as simple as other lights. Will update if I find anything. Thanks everyone on this thread for all the details which made my work easy.

I have a 2021 Toyota sienna le and I discovered that it doesn't have Puddle Lights at all. In the same place is a red trim cover with no lights and wiring harness inside. I want to add a Puddle Lights does anyone know how I can do this? Does anyone know the actual part number for the wiring harness from Puddle Lights

I remember reading somewhere that the LE does have the wiring harness hidden inside, maybe it’s taped far enough inside you couldn’t see/feel it? Maybe someone with an LE who had the door panel off could give a definitive answer.

I also think it is impossible for toyota to design a special harness alone for LE
For those who have not completed the license plate lamp bulb replacement yet, it is much easier to remove the lense if you remove the entire light housing assembly first. It is very simple to do.

There are 2 clips, one on each side of the housing. Slide your trim tool or flat head screwdriver under the foam seal. Press in on the clip gently and it should pop out quite easily. From there, the lense is much more easily removed. Diagram below shows locations of the housing clips.

There are diferent part numbers for the door wiring harness. I took the door panel off of my 21 LE to confirm and I could not find any evidence of the wiring needed for putting in courtesy lamps. The photo below on the left was posted by @cowdog360. I highlighted the light wiring. The photo on the right is from my LE.

Thanks for confirming. It wouldn’t be too hard to just pull the wire in. There is pre-wiring for the lighted door sills accessory you can tap into.

That's a great idea. There are some aftermarket kits that include the pigtails for wiring them in on Toyota's without preexisting courtesy lamps. Just picked up a pair. Here is the link for anyone interested. A quick search led me to some folks with gen 3s that installed them successfully.

Chinese market option. Not for North America.
having a new to me 2008 I am wondering , do the plastic covers of the interior lights turn darker with age?
On my 4x4 I took out the little fuse type overhead bulb and installed a interior light with 1157 bulb that made driving at night with it on ,next to impossible but it really made a difference when stopped and reading a map.
If the plastic does age is there anything I can do to un-age them?
