TIL 2021 Sienna Edition (TIL = Today I Learned)

There's an extremely popular forum on Reddit called "today I learned" (abbreviated TIL). If you haven't seen it you should check it out at reddit dot com /r/todayilearned/ It's a place where people post interesting things they recently learned across a limitless breadth of topics.

Every time I come across some new interesting feature with our Sienna I think that such a thread would be interesting to share here. Granted, if you've read the 500 pages of manuals you presumably already know all these things :) but not all of us have (or will) rtfm so this is the Spark Notes version. Cool and maybe non-obvious things that you've been delighted to discover about your van. I'll start off with a couple of my own and hope others will share as well. When you come across something you didn't already know, maybe give it a like.

So the first one for me was probably when we learned that the recessed ridge on the driver's and passenger's door handles is a lock button. The first few days I was using the remote to lock the car but once I discovered that button that's mostly what I use! Very cool!

How do you turn off the rear seat reminder?
Under settings in the MID.

Might need to long press OK.

Was checking for someone and learned today that holding either sliding door button on FOB will not only unlock and open that door but it will unlock all doors.

Else have to press unlock twice on FOB to unlock all doors.

So get to pick... whatever blows my hair back!!

This actually pauses the audio (even radio) and picks back up where you left off. Useful when ordering at a drive thru but don't want to miss what they're talking about on the radio. You can later fast forward through commercials.
Pressing the volume knob turns the audio off.
Is this on all trims... ability to pause radio and then forward?

Gotta try this later this week.
Does it go away or your ears go numb :) Its so annoying.
I think Toyota bought all the annoying tones en masse.

Even the Roads are icy tone is much more annoying and loud then our other vehicles.

My HVAC defaults to eco regardless of what drive mode I may be in. If I want the extra A/C boost, I have to manually turn eco off.
Can you not keep ECO Hvac off thru 9" inch screen?
We have base LE and can confirm there is light in middle of ceiling in 3rd row and also one further back on hatch looking at cargo area. Not the very brightest though. Our other van [also base trim] from more then a decade ago has brighter lights and cost less then half vs Sienna.

Older van also has 2 12V outlets and our other vehicles have 3+ plus several USB outlets so not sure why Sienna only has 1 12V??
Maybe - they dont want you to drain the 12v battery when in "accessory mode".
Kind of defaulting to lowest denominator in that case.

We only use 12V when driving... no need for us otherwise.

Then it should just be disabled if not driving.

We only really use 12V when operating our vehicles.
TIL:

1. TPMS seems to have active monitoring. What I mean is that when one of my tire started loosing air, it alerted me right away.

Long story: I started out with 36PSI cold. IIRC, it gets to 40-42PSI while driving. I got an alert around 34PSI to pull over and inspect tire. I.e. it wasn't just low tire pressure warning. It spelled out that front passenger tire needs to be looked at right away when it is safe to do so. This was helpful because I was able to slow down and drive to a gas station few miles down the road. Big part of tread was missing so I had to put on my spare (my 4th flat in as many months :( ).

2. Big brother is watching you. I got an email a day after from my local servicing dealer to get the TPMS alert looked at.

Long story: I put on my full size spare and continued to Myrtle beach still 300 miles away. This was around 5PM day before Thanksgiving. Everything was closed for Thanksgiving so the spare stayed on for couple of days. I suppose the alert stayed long enough for the dealership to make an effort to send me an email.

Btw, when I got my extended warranty couple of months back from Jerry, he was able to get my current mileage sitting far away in Hutchinson, KS. I have extended my remote connect and emergency connect. I suppose it could have been Service Connect too which is standard for first 3-4 years??

3. TPMS goes blank for all wheels if just one of the tire doesn't have a sensor.
Long story: TPMS went all blank when I put on my full size spare without a sensor. It stopped showing tire pressures on other 3 tires and just showed generic error/alert. I wonder if this is a bug or a feature.

4. General : Directional tires like Michelin cross climates 2(CC2) need to be on all 4 (or on same axle?).
Long story : I needed the flat tire replaced. CC2 seemed like a good idea based on notes around here and other places. I plan to do CC2 on all 4 when OEMs are used up. I have about 36K on OEMs. I drove to a far away NTB in Myrtle beach area that had our size CC2 in stock (Firestone was just a quarter mile away from where we were staying). NTB advisor told me right away that I can't do CC2 on just one tire. It would sound and drive horrible. My thinking was that may be I get one CC2 now and move it to full-size spare when I get all 4 CC2s down the road. ( I suppose I should have told him more about my situation over the phone before driving over there. Oh well, that's just me and this is not the first time ;) )
Also looking at CC2s once Falkens wear to about 5/32". Think have about 8-9/32" currently. Less wear in cold country!!

There was a post a year or so ago where hybrid Sienna owner did not like the CC2s but in general have heard very good reviews about them.

Look at getting from Costco when they have like $100+ off sale plus warranty is pretty good.

Did anyone got this workimg on 2023 LE? I tried several times with the mentioned combination and for some reason it doesn't work. Does it need activated by the dealer now?
As stated in the post you quoted, nothing needs to be activated. No subscriptions required. Just takes practice. Getting the timing right is a pain in the ass
I don't think LE has remote start. Unless some hidden gem??

I don’t have a TIL story to share, however, I’d like to find the purpose of these clips on the sun visors. Then I can say TIL...

We're around 1 year on the fobs so wondering if should preemptively change batteries?

Unlikely both fobs need new battery at same time.
Does anyone know if there is a way to have the headlights turn on when you unlock the doors at night?
Not sure if will work however try putting headlights in AUTO mode using the stalk.

In our case we got 17 months out of one fob's battery and 23 months out of the other. I believe we got a "low battery" warning on the dash display for several days before changing them and the range was noticeably weaker before changing them so there's plenty of advance notice. I don't plan to change mine till I have to for the simple reason that those clips in the fob don't feel like the most sturdy things ever and I don't want to stress them more often than I have to.
Good to know, thanks.

Agree the fobs not the most sturdy... nothing like the tank like fobs from the German vehicles.

Gotta be careful what I post!!

Today my fob would not work :(

Took off cover and jiggled the battery a bit and voila... the remote worked to unlock and lock... I was just adding windshield washer fluid so did not drive.
Anyways at least it seems the fob can be reinvigorated. Strange as no warning on dashboard so perhaps a little jiggle was just needed for now.

Now to find best price for battery so not caught off guard!!

In case it helps... Wish we get a Billion dollars!! :)
