Why is it that I feel like I need to shower in bleach after visiting any Toyota dealership? It seems like Toyota build good cars but their business model, marketing and dealerships are just absolutely horrible.

I've visited more than ten different Toyota dealerships. At each one, we notice 100 sales guys walking around that aren't needed. If we could go online and hit 'buy now' we would. In every case and every visit, I've known more about the car I'd like to buy than the sales person.

I just wanted to put it out there, that the Toyota buying experience has been abysmal. I know there's a supply and demand issue ongoing, but come on, I should need like I need to get clean again after suffering another horrible waste of time at each Toyota dealership.

In contrast I have a BMW 550i. That car sucks and leaks more oil at 60k miles than my wife's 180k mile sienna. However, when shopping for the BMW and comparing Mercedes etc. I didn't feel like I needed to shower after dealing with the sales staff.

Pretty much anyone can say the same thing about any other dealership brand. Except for Tesla and some other minor players, dealerships are INDEPENDENTLY OWNED and are not the manufacturer. Plenty of complaints about Tesla service/delivery centers and there's the illusion that all folks pay the same purchase price upfront. Their online purchase process, although a tad slimey with the whole "savings included" pricing, is fairly straightforward and is used by many online car "dealerships" like Carvana, Vroom, Carmax, etc. The latter even sells new cars this way too.

I feel and understand your frustration. BTDT Good luck in your search, the Sienna is worth it!

This is nothing new about Toyotas dealerships. As far back as I can remember they have been the worst.

Email toyota USA about your complaint, that makes the biggest difference.
The dealers are doing nothing but undoing their dealer manufacture model even quicker. They are selling cars before they even hit the lot and for a lot less work for way more money.
I would have rather given toyota my extra 3k over msrp so that they can add me birdseye view/wireless android.
The dealer add no value to the process to these markups and if anything alot worst customer services during these times.

I just picked up our 2023 XLE; we had a good buying experience at Sunny King Toyota in Anniston, AL. I live in the Atlanta area but I couldn't get any Atlanta area dealers to work with me without a huge mark-up and long wait list.
The mark-up over sticker was $5 to $10k in the Atlanta area with no idea of delivery timing. I called James Bradford at Sunny King, smaller market, 90 miles away; and he was very responsive and honest. I gave a deposit in July and they wrote up a build sheet to submit to Toyota. They charged a $2k mark-up and I was forced to take some fluff options like phone connection cables and paint protection; but we needed a van. Our 2006 Sienna we bought new was finally dying after 216k miles. He couldn't guarantee that I would get the exact build but when it came in, it actually was exactly as ordered. We are happy with our experience with this dealer.

Some people think that after visiting the BMW and Merdecedes dealerships a few times in a row one could no longer afford to take a hot shower :)

On a more serious note, we all know what the problem with the dealership model is. And of course there are dealerships that are reasonably efficient and customer-friendly (within the limitations of their business model), and those that people like me wouldn't set foot in.

My family was in the car business. Dealerships are completely predatory businesses. They take advantage of the people who have the least to lose. Unfortunately the car industry brainwashes the population. They succumb to the hype and promise of shiney new toys. In reality car dealerships are like Las Vegas Casinos. The odds are stacked against you. When you go into a dealership ready to purchase a car you have to be mentally, physically and psychologically prepared. First you need to learn how the dealership works. You can go online YouTube and visit sites like YAA. Learn all the attempts on how the dealership will attermpt to separate you and your money. These people are professional and you are amateurs. Remember you are going into battle with an adversary. Once in the dealership they attempt to control the narrative. You have to gain leverage throughout the process. Study the car markert get more information. You can 't do this alone. Do your homework. Car dealerships and the sales people don''t give a shit about you no matter how it seems to appear.

And, I gotta add, toyota dealerships are LOVING it that people are paying MORE than msrp for cars. They are just laughing their way to the bank.

How do you know a dealership isn't giving you the whole truth? Their lips move. ;)

Open question: In all seriousness, how is a monopoly (Tesla and other start ups) better for the consumer in the long run? At least in the (poor) dealership model, the consumer has a choice (often multiple).

Hey, I know Sunny King! A few hours from me. Glad to hear you had a good experience with them, and good for them for getting business from Atlanta. I think the phone cables and paint protection are a SE Toyota mandatory thing, had to have them on both our ‘21 Sienna and a ‘22 Camry hybrid purchased from Tuscaloosa Toyota (which I recommend very highly to anyone looking).

My opinion is the smaller town dealers are much better, more honest, and more customer friendly. You see, when you have a "small nest" you cant crap in it because you will smell it for dinner. However, if you live in a place like Atlanta, there will be another fool who hasnt heard about you. The small towns have to keep their few customers happy. Shop in a small town dealership. Example: SVG Toyota Chilicothe Ohio. Its often worth it to fly to another town to save 5000 over msrp, for example.
