I'm researching towing with my 2018 Sienna XLE AWD and have questions about trailer brakes.

Current plan is for a pop up camper in the 2000lb dry weight (or less) range.
Driving would include frequent trips into the Rockies.
I have only ever driven trailers without brakes or with thrust brakes (?), not electric.

1. Thrust brakes vs electric - what are the pros and cons of each?
2. When do trailer brakes start to become helpful or necessary?
3. If the trailer I buy doesn't come with brakes, is retrofitting generally a viable option or not?

What else should I be asking about?

Thanks

Steve

The trailer brakes will brake proportianally when the van brakes are applied.

A 2000 lb trailer with water, propane etc could easily weigh over 2500 lbs, which is more than the weight of a toyota Corolla.

All this weight would need to be stopped by the van if the trailer doesn't have brakes, which could cause the Van's brakes to overheat and fail.
