I have a 2012 Limited AWD that has the dreaded humming noise coming from the rear differential. Based on my research on here, I'm guessing the beaing has failed in my viscous coupler. It seems many have replaced the failed bearing due to the high price of replacing the coupler assembly. However, I did find one post that stated the replaced bearing started making noises again after a year or two. What is the latest consensus with dealing with this issue? Are people replacing the bearing or replacing the entire assembly?

Here is my two cents.

If you replace the part yourself, you can first check the viscous coupler and if it looks good then you can just replace the bearing. Otherwise, I suggest that you just replace the whole part with a brand new one. You don't want to pay a mechanic to do this job more than once.

I appreciate your 2 cents. I'm leaning more towards replacing the whole unit.
