What is the verdict for the rear wiper?

Has anyone successfully replace the rubber insert on your rear wiper? Mine is time to do something regardless I clean it. Front ones smooth after I clean the glass and rubbers. Btw, because its Not Expensive, too many people simply replace their blades as soon as squeezing + smart dealership suggested. Try to clean them first, tons on youtube.

Has anyone successfully replace the rubber insert on your rear wiper?
I've replaced all three wiper inserts a total of 13 times since I bought my 2014 Sienna - every spring and fall. I haven't replaced them on our vehicles since fall 2019 due to the vehicles being rarely driven in the past year. I've found that the easiest way to replace the rear wiper insert is to stop the wiper arm when it is pointed downward, slip a rolled up cloth towel under the wiper arm to hold it away from the glass, pull out the old insert, transfer the reusable metal ribs to the new rubber insert and slip the new rubber insert into the wiper blade frame. It's important that the reusable metal ribs match the curvature of the glass when inserting them into the rubber.

The rear wiper blade insert is a little more difficult to replace than the front wiper blade inserts since the rear blade insert is held in place only by the metal "stops" on both ends of the wiper blade frame. Getting the rubber past an end stop when inserting it can be a little difficult.

I remove the front wiper blades to replace the rubber inserts since it is too much of a stretch to do it while the blades are attached to the wiper arms. I've found that cleaning the windshield and back glass with denatured alcohol and then applying a water repellant such as Rain-X a few times a year keeps the wiper blades working better.

Yes, that was/ is my plan. However, if non oem works well why not. Any chance to see your or all other 3 gen owners, does the wiper apply/ touch the surface of the glass properly? Because I just took a picture, about 35% on the both edges, there are gaps about 1/4".

I use only OEM rubber wiper blade inserts. I've found that aftermarket wiper blades often to do not work well on Toyota and Lexus vehicles. I just helped a guy in Alberta on a Lexus forum with the rear wiper on on his Lexus RX. He bought an aftermarket wiper blade that worked poorly due to not conforming well to the curvature of the glass but unfortunately had discarded the OEM rear wiper blade with its insert. His problem was resolved by purchasing an OEM wiper blade and rubber insert.

I am definitely not a fan of TRICO blades but maybe some of them work properly on some makes and models. I tried aftermarket TRICO wiper blades years ago on one of our Lexus LS sedans and it couldn't begin to conform to the curvature of the glass; the right side TRICO blade even damaged the rear edge of the hood due to it being taller than the OEM blade. And, yes, I was using the correct TRICO blade according to their fitment chart.

I buy OEM wiper blade inserts for our Toyotas at a discount at a local Toyota dealership that participates in the Costco Auto Program through which I also purchased our 2014 Sienna Limited.

If you decide on the OEM Toyota insert, just contact your dealer as they will have it and should also be able to install it for you at no charge, if you ask nicely. I always purchased the OEM insert for rear of my Odyssey and the dealer's parts department would install it for me at no extra charge.

I haven't had issues with aftermarket wipers and usually just pick them up at Costco when they are on sale (they are on sale now thru 4/4). Usually they sell the Goodyear or Michelin brand and the Michelins are available now. I don't believe they have 16's that will work on the rear as the hardware is not compatible, but I could be wrong. I replace mine every 6 months on all my cars regardless if good or bad.

I kept my original rear wiper blade just in case the TRICO one doesn't work out!

OMG, never though there would be such extended discussion on wipers .. lol

check out Bosch ICON Silicone beam type wipers (the original ones). By far the best wipers I've used and it has incredible durability. Will survive multiple winters. Used them on all of my vehicles. Typically last like 5 years or so of moderate usage.. Silicone blades lasts quite ahile.

Key step(s) to fully realized it's potential is to thoroughly clean your glass spotless first. Quality silicone blades usually have a pre-treatment coating on them to prime the glass to prevent future streaking.

The current one uses some dual rubber shenanigans. They're okay but just par with competitors, IMO.

Currently testing out the PIAA Aero Vogue on the Sienna. Seems good so far but too early (3mos+) to judge.

Anywhere is about $14 because it is the beam style. But, it is on SALE now at Walmart. My suggestion, buy it while is "cheap". It's $10 Now.
The way I did, I call advance auto near my home, I asked price match. They will tell you it is Not compatible with sienna bla bla, ignore it. Make sure it iincludes Adaptor A! Or simply, order it at Walmart 2 days free shipping. I still wonder how others can survive with those gigantically gaps🤔🤔

I use OEM since, as others stated, they conform better to the glass. I had the same issue on our previous van which was a Ford, so it's not specifically a Toyota issue.

I get "Denso" brand from Rock Auto, which is OEM. (The difference between Denso vs. the one from the dealer is the Denso unit comes in a blue box that says "Denso" and the dealer unit comes in a red box that says "Toyota".) For the fronts, get the "hybrid" ones to match OEM.

I was told years ago that Toyota quit selling the inserts but maybe they've reversed that. It'd be nice to save a couple of bucks. I would just pop off the blade and do the inserts that way instead of fiddling with it on the van, though. To each his/her own.

I did some experimenting, this was my first attempt to change the insert instead of the entire blade (like I have done for all past vehicles). I wanted to go with silicone blades from PIAA because I heard they last a long time. My original blades that came with the 2015 sienna lasted all the way until 2020 when they started to separate from the blade.

So last year I went online and found the correct length and measurement size for my stock inserts from the PIAA website. It did not list one that matches the sienna but I was able to find a right match of length and style for the fronts. I ended up cutting to fit a smaller size PIAA for the rear.

I reviewed Youtube videos to figure out how to remove the blades from the arms. Once the blade was removed I cleaned them and then inspected how to separate the insert from the blade (watched Youtube videos of various other types/styles... they all work on the same idea).

Once I was ready to install the PIAA inserts, I realized that what allowed the stock inserts to lock in would not work with the PIAA. I had to trim the end of one side of the blade to allow it to fit but not perfectly lock. I selected the end which would not allow the insert to go flying off while in use to trim.

In the end my results were okay for the area that was wiping. However, as many have said, the curvature of the front/rear glass make it impossible for the insert to touch at the extreme edges (noticeable amount). I have also noticed that my passenger side blade while driving on the freeway seems to be lifting a little as I am driving or when I wipe. Same issue with the rear, the lowest extreme would not touch the glass.

In the future I will try the other silicone blades you guys have suggested before my post. Tho I think these silicone blades will probably give me another 5 years of life (I might sell the sienna before trying the next set). 🤷🏽‍♂️

replaced all the wiper blades including the rear one with a replacement rubber insert. Perfect. just get the right width blades replacement. just cut the inserts to exactly the same length as the original and carefull y slide in. As long as the metal and plastic parts are in fine shape, it is better, cheaper, faster and you can do it as often as you need to.

Thanks for this thread. My rear wiper isn't making full contact with the curved rear glass like some have shown in pics and I assumed it was just worn out. Maybe the previous owner of my 2018 Sienna changed it.

@bowtiefan I can confirm that the 16" Michelin wiper from Costco does not fit the Sienna. I tried it.

I'd like to know if anybody tried the following Bosch H409 which Amazon said would fit but the reviews that reference the Sienna are mixed.

If not, I might get the Trico 55-160 from Advanced Auto Parts that @Siennakucool recommended. FYI for the frugal people, they emailed me a 25% off coupon after I signed on and searched on their website.

One more question related to this discussion. I found the following wiper blade and refill parts for my 2018 Sienna SE.

However during my search, I also found the following part numbers which also fit my Sienna but I can't figure out exactly what they are compared to the other 2. If you click on the "WHAT THIS FITS" tab on each link, you'll see that it fits all 3rd generation Siennas. Can anybody shed some info?
