My ABS Sensor has been on, and I took it to my mechanic. He called Toyota and found out the part that is defective is some type of ABS sensor, and the cost is $2300, not including labor. He advised me to leave it along if I don't mind driving around with the light on. So that's what I did, and he said my breaks should work fine, just won't have ABS feature. Does this sound accurate?

Unfortunately, there is not enough useful information to really know. $2300 sounds like the main ABS pump/computer module, and not just an individual ABS wheel sensor. Wheel sensors are more like $300. So if the main pump assembly is bad, exactly how is it bad? Is all brake fluid passing thru it unimpeded, or did it fail is some odd state in which it's limiting pressure and unbalancing your brake system? It also acts, IIRC, as the proportioning valve. Loss of that could impact stopping distance. You've also lost stability control, if your van had that feature.

Net: Repairs could be expensive, but what is the price of safety? What will be your liability exposure if you have an accident in any way related to the disabling of a prime safety system?

Have you considered used / reconditioned / salvage yard parts?
