We bought 2016 Sienna SE, and we settled on base version as technology package was $5k and the only worthy add-on for us was the BSM.
I'm wondering if you can purchase BSM mirrors and install them.
But of course I'm unsure of cost, how they work, and if it's easy to install.
One major question that I have is if the whole system is based behind the mirror or are there monitors on the side/back of car that the system uses.

Let's just assume that the whole game was in the mirror. Per one of the parts sites, replacement units are over $500 a piece. Now they have to be integrated in to the system, so you'll need some programming support. For instance, they flash when you turn on your directional, so they receive a signal from the body control unit (another microprocessor). So unfortunately it's not so easy on a newer car to add features.

Check with your dealership to see who they use for AfterMarket installs.

There are options out there to add blindspot monitoring to a vehicle but if you want factory installed, I don't think the dealership can do it or that it is sold as an option.

From experience, it would also probably cost a small fortune.

for example:

here is another
