I have a 2011 Sienna XLE fwd that has a split in the driver side CV boot. Has anyone heard of a replacement boot that can be installed without pulling the axle out? The CV joint is not making any noise at this point. Thnaks.

Hello Jim, yes, they make split boot kits that allow you to replace the boot without pulling the axle.

They are a great, time-saving and convenient item to install on a vehicle you are planning to sell in the next 100 miles or less.

Replacement aftermarket axles tend to last 20-60k, depending on your luck.

OEM axles, as far as I can tell, last forever as long as the boots are maintained/replaced and joints repacked with the grease that comes in the kit at about 150k before they split and allow the grease to leak out and ruin the joint (necessitating the hamster wheel of aftermarket axles).

This is a very, very, very long winded way of saying, you are fortunate to have OEM axles that can be rebooted. OEM Toyota boot kits are around $50 and replacement axles are ~$600.

It is so easy to pull the driver side axle, I don't know why you wouldn't do it. It's just a little more difficult than a brake job.

Rebooting the axle, that's a little more time consuming, and probably a DIY or Toyota dealer job. Just remember, when it comes the replacement grease, "thinner is inner."

Edit: any competent shop should be able to reboot an axle. I'm just jaded because I recently took a driveshaft into a mechanic to have the u-joints pressed out, and they ruined the driveshaft. Oy!
