Hello

On my way out of the dealer i heard a winding noise when turning my steering wheel. I went back in and had the manager look at it. He said it was some chord or gizmo that need replaced in the steering wheel It can affect airbag but my airbag light is not on. The horn is not working. It was a few months ago, so i am not clear what is needed to repair or remember clearly how its done Price to fix was 650 USD plus tax. I need my horn. Before i fix any suggestions ?

Wait, so they BROKE your horn and then told you that you would have to pay $650 to fix it??? I'd be sitting down with the senior service manager on that one!

This should be enough to guide you: Toyota Sienna Service Manual: Horn system - Horn It may not be exact, but it should give you an idea. I will caution, that, if they said $650, it's probably $50-100 in parts and $550-600 in labor. That probably means they're billing it as a 4-hour job. Since you've never done the job before, that's probably a reasonable estimate for the amount of time it will take you.

Let me clearify as my memory is working its way back.. The noise was new (as soon i started it up in the service parking lot I was alarmed). Now i realize its intermittent to not making noise for weeks then comes back.. They did a fuel service cleaning and replaced a seal that was causing my transmission to leak. . I did argue with manager to no avail about the noise. I am not sure if the horn was working or not before i brought it in there. Thanks for the info, not much i can do but take it in to fix. That fuel line cleaning i believe improved mpg.

Do the stereo and cruise control buttons on the steering wheel work? Have you checked fuses and the horns themselves? Replacing a clockspring is a lot of work with a fair amount of things that can go wrong so make sure it’s the clockspring that’s bad.

In both our Toyotas the steering column squeaks when the weather turns cold. Is that what you hear?

Is your airbag light flashing or on? I think they're ahead of themselves, as the manager or service adviser, told you that's what it was without a proper diagnosis..... and just shot out a price..... I'd go to a different dealer and have them diag it for sure. And don't tell them the price the of the other dealer, make them work for you, so they maybe able to gain your trust and business.....
