Seriously thinking of doing the same. It’s the Asian guy’s youtube channel right?
Would be cool if you could keep us updated on how long each step is taking you and also any differences from those youtube vids you may experience.
Are you buying your new head unit and wiring harness from Crutchfield? What wiring harness are you planning to use?
Yup. He's Vietnamese. In the comments section of one of his videos another Viet guy chimed in saying something along the lines of "Viet, right?" and then wrote something in Vietnamese. The guy who posted the video said something along the lines of "Guilty as charged".
I'm pretty sure he's in Texas. I live in Texas as well and I think I saw a Texas plate on a car in the background at some point. There's a big Vietnamese community in Houston.
I'd be happy to let y'all know how long the steps take but I don't know how much good that will do. I'm not a very fast worker when it comes to such things. I'm always double checking everything to make sure I get it right.
I did order the JVC head unit from Crutchfield. That was $349. I could have picked up something less expensive but I wanted the ability to play compact disc. I'm an old guy that still likes that format. It's nice to pick up a CD from a thrift shop and listen to it on the way home.
I can already see a couple of things I will do differently. He cut the speaker out of the frame and then cut the basket off it. He then screwed the new speaker into the flange atop the frame. I plan to do the same.
Then he soldered the + & - from the speaker to the connector on the frame. I'm no good at soldering so I ordered some adapters from Bezos' Big Online Rummage Sale. Everything will just be plug & play. I will need to secure the connector to keep any rattles at bay and install a grommet in the frame to keep the cables from rubbing or making any noise.
Rear and door speaker wire adapters are 72-8104. That is the Metra part number but you can look it up on Amazon under that part number and it will come up. $9 for a pack of four.
Dash speakers will use 72-8110 adapters. $11 for a pack of two. No need for drilling there.
The speakers I listed above are the exact same speakers that the videos showed being installed. I paused the videos to get the model numbers off the boxes he showed in the videos. I ordered those from Amazon as they are no longer available on Crutchfield. Since they're the same as the guy in the video used they will work.
I ordered a Batige single port USB 3.0 male to female AUX cable (Amazon). I will pull the power port next to the dashboard cup holders and install the port there. That'll give me an in-dash USB port connected to the head unit that sits right in front of the center console.
The guy in the video tapped into the wiring going into the existing backup cam (small screen atop the dash). He was very clear about which wires to tap into, but didn't specify exactly how he made his connections there. There was a bit of electrical tape at the connections. He probably soldered them together than then wrapped with electrical tape. I ordered some T-Tap wire connectors and some spade quick disconnect connectors from Amazon so that I can make clean, secure connections without needing to solder.
As far as the wiring harness goes, I did order that from Crutchfield. When I ordered the head unit they offered up an installation kit that included the dash kit (Metra 99-229S) & the PAC RP4.2-TY11 wiring interface to keep my steering wheel controls.
I also paid for Crutchfield's wiring harness service - the one where they put the wiring harness together for you so most everything should be plug & play. That was $28. I don't mind paying that to avoid having to do all those connections myself. I'm not that confident in my ability there. I did a head unit install on my previous car, a 2003 Lincoln Town Car, and ordered the same service from them at the time. It turned out well.
The adapters and the rear & door speakers have already been delivered. The Crutchfield order should be in tomorrow and the dash speakers on Monday. I plan on installing the head unit this weekend and all of the speakers next weekend.
I'm really looking forward to this project. My old radio is crapping out and is archaic by today's standards. It'll be nice to have Android auto, Waze, easy voice calling and easy Bluetooth connectivity again.
