I found you can tap the holder and get the glasses to wiggle into a position that will allow you to open the door. This happened to my wife when for some reason she thought putting 2 sets of glasses int here was a good idea...

 

happened to me once... If I remember it right, I pushed it real hard as if I was almost crushing the glasses inside. What I remember was I attempted it several times on different days to prevent me from getting too frustrated and just break it open. And yes, I might have put 2 glasses there too.

I'm reporting 2 more eaters.
One is the push to open floor console, the place behind the hinge eats coins and business cards.
The other one is the gap between the floor console and driver/RF passenger seat. --> eats my pens - you need a stick to fish.

 

This happens to me fairly often, since I keep clip-ons in there instead of a full pair of glasses. Rapping on the center of the door with the pinkie side of my fist a few times always works. Just tap enough to wiggle the contents around and move it away from the latching mechanism. Sometimes it takes a fairly hard tap, but I've never seen any ill effects from it. Good luck!

 

Not sure what year of van. The same thing happened with my 2004 Sienna and i was able to use a screw driver to pop out the holder. The flip down holder was held in place by 2 pins.

 

I’ve tried, light tapping, medium tapping, and breaking the sucker down TAPPING and nothing is dislodging these glasses…I guess I’ll have to take it to the dealership to see if they can disassemble somehow…don’t think I’ll try to screw driver because I don’t want to bust anything.

 

I made the mistake today of trying to store an especially large pair of cheap sunglasses that my wife wore after cataract surgery in the glasses holder in the roof. The glasses turned out to be way too big to allow the glasses holder to close but then the holder would not open beyond the mirror position.

Pushing up the glasses holder with light pressure as I normally would didn't come close to closing it. The holder remained in the mirror position.

My main concern in applying enough pressure to deform the sunglasses enough for the holder to close was that I might break the glasses holder hinges.

So ... remembering the technique I've been using to take pressure off the fuel door hinges so that the top hinge doesn't break again ....

Using both hands while sitting on the console, I pushed the holder upward with a considerable (OK, massive) amount of force pushing on the hinge areas with one hand so that the hinges wouldn't be stressed or break and pushing on the trailing edge of the glasses holder with the other hand. This was enough depress/deform the sunglasses, allow the glasses holder to fully close and then fully open so that the sunglasses could be removed.

Lesson learned.

 

I only have one pair in there and I've yet to get them back. I've tried many, many times to release it or shift the position of my glasses. I've concluded it's just poor design.

 

My Rayban’s would be fine in the hokder, but my wife’s Rayban’s are a little larger and would get stuck. I spent a few minutes manipulating it to get the sunglass holder to release and since then have never used it ever again. I bought a visor clip for my wife and for me I just keep my sunglasses with me. For my son, I leave his in the string close baggie the Raybans came in and just hook it on the front passenger seat back hook.

 

Had this happen to me before....

Used a wooden BBQ skewer to poke at the stuck arms and pop it out...

Now I keep my daily sunglasses in the A-pillar windows and have another set with arms that close tightly in the actual holder

 

I found that I can use a regular key to push the pin on the left side to allow the door to slide down. The left side has the track for guiding the door into the closed, mirror, and open positions. I first pushed the door up as far as it can go, then pushed the pin toward me with the key, then lightly pulled the door to the open position, and that did it. The key just pushes the pin toward follow the track to open the door.
