Has anyone else had a ticking noise occur after the engine warmed up with their 3.5 V6? I just got mine back from an oil change and it sounds a bit more pronounced. Wondering if this is a normal sound. It’s a 2012 Sienna XLE with approx 145,000 miles

This one has a bit more metallic sound to it.

Is this noise new?

You may want to check that the oil level is up to where is should be. It is not unheard of that an oil change goes bad and someone forgets to fill the engine with oil or does something that causes all the oil to pour out while driving around. If you do find that there isn't any oil on the dipstick don't touch the vehicle after that. You would need to contact the place that did the oil change immediately and have them rectify the issue, driving around without oil can destroy the engine in only a few seconds.

The noise finally presented itself again yesterday after they drove the car for about 20 minutes. The techs took a stethoscope to all the areas and said they couldn’t pinpoint where the noise was coming from. They think it’s inside the engine. Possibly the valves but they weren’t sure. I asked them to change the oil and filter again just to see if that might take care of the problem (since after the last change was when things started to act up). I’m not sure I want to start pouring money into them diving into the engine if they’re not sure about the noise.

They also found a cracked rear spring and are advising new rear brakes and front struts. Jeesh. $$

picked the van up last night after the inspection and oil / filter change. The new oil and filter really reduced the ticking noise to something that sounds more like what I remember the van sounding like. That said, The notes said they found a slight bit of metal in the old oil. Very faint glitter and they are recommending an engine rebuild starting with the valves.

Some say that glitter in oil is a ticking time bomb and others say that you can continue to use the vehicle and just change the oil more often. I’ve been religious in changing the oil on this van between 7500-10000 intervals so I’m not sure what’s going on inside there.

Wondering with all the other repairs that are needed if I should trade into something a bit newer with lower miles at this point or if I should wait and see how this one performs over the next couple months. Advice welcome! Thanks!

Does your engine burn oil?

It seems "harsh" to rebuild an engine when they can't diagnose a particular mechanical problem. If you want to see if there's really metal in the oil, send your oil for an analysis.

If you've lost faith in the vehicle, start shopping for a new one, so you can get a good deal.

Too bad you can't send out the old oil for analysis. I'd drive 500 miles or so and take a sample (from the oil filter, then top off as needed) and send it out to blackstone for analysis.

I'd start shopping sooner than later, nothing worse than being down a vehicle and needing a replacement asap.

Believe it or not, it might be your alternator!
